The Financial Aid Office will send notification of financial assistance by April 1, provided the FAFSA is on file with the College at that time.

A completed application file includes the following:

  • Application And Fee: The accompanying application forms (AP-1 to AP-5) should be completed and returned to the Office of Admissions with a non-refundable $35 application fee payable to Allegheny College.
  • School Report/High School Transcript: Complete the upper section only of the School Report form and deliver it to your high school counselor. Your counselor should provide the balance of the required information, including a recommendation, and forward the completed form, along with an official copy of your high school transcript, to Allegheny College. In addition to your high school transcript, please submit your mid-year grades when they are available. As a courtesy, provide a pre-addressed, stamped envelope for your high school counselor. • Standardized Tests: As an applicant, you are required to take either the SAT or the ACT no later than January of the final year of high school and are expected to arrange for the results to be forwarded directly to Allegheny College. For students applying for admission for Fall 2009, the College will use the SAT Critical Reasoning and Math subsections, and less so the Writing subsection for admission evaluation. SAT subject tests are optional and used primarily for placement purposes. It is strongly recommended that you take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is your second language.
  • Teacher Evaluation: Please have at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher who has taught you in a major subject (English, history, mathematics, science or a foreign language) forwarded to the Office of Admissions. Early Admission (entering college after the junior year of high school)

Secondary school students who wish to begin college study at the conclusion of the junior year may do so under a special enrollment plan. The student must demonstrate the ability to benefit from entering college earlier by:

  • interviewing with a member of the admissions staff to discuss the particulars of such an enrollment plan
  • submitting ACT or SAT test scores no later than January prior to the date of desired entrance
  • obtaining a letter from the high school principal or senior administrator indicating full understanding and approval of the Early Admissions plan
  • enclosing a one-page letter with the application for admission that explains why the applicant desires early enrollment

Deferred Entrance

A student may elect to defer entrance to Allegheny for one calendar year. A written request should be submitted to the Office of Admissions after all enrollment procedures have been completed. The $400 initial registration deposit will reserve the space for a year.

Transferring Credit

Transfer credit for advanced work may be considered for credit according to the conditions outlined under the section titled “Academic Regulations” in our catalogue. Students may also earn college credit by achieving an acceptable score on the AP exam (4 or 5), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations. Allegheny also accepts most “College in High School” credits.

For Non-degree Candidates

Persons desiring to pursue studies in the College are expected to be prepared to enter the freshman class as candidates for a degree. Under exceptional circumstances, however, individuals who are not seeking a degree may be admitted as non-degree candidates and allowed to follow selected studies to a maximum of two courses per semester. An interview with a member of the Admissions staff is suggested to discuss the particular educational aims of the candidate and the requirements of the non-degree program.
