2018-19 Admissions Gator Guide Application

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Gator Guide! Our student tour guides play a crucial role in the recruitment of future Allegheny students. The impression a student guide makes on a prospective student could be one of the most influential and strongest memories the student has of the Allegheny experience.

Gator Guides are campus leaders, and their job is among the most important on campus; Guides directly impact and shape the future of the College by coming into contact with thousands of prospective students and families each year, and by helping the Admissions Office’s internal operations run smoothly. It is challenging, but may be among the most rewarding experiences during your time at Allegheny.

Responsibilities

  • The Tour
    Guiding tours is the most visible aspect of the job, and can be a very influential factor in a prospective student’s decision to attend Allegheny. Gator Guides must be able to tell stories, answer questions, and relay pertinent information to prospective students and their families about all facets of the Allegheny experience. This also requires an ability to convey important marketing and public relations points. Training is provided.
  • Office Work
    In-office work is plentiful and students who are not giving tours are expected to do daily office tasks (filing, mailings, organizing, etc.) during their weekly office hours. At many times throughout the year office work may be the main activity for a tour guide.
  • Other Duties
    Participation in special on-campus events, hosting prospective students, phone-a-thons, new tour guide orientation, and other meetings is also required. Most of these programs occur on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings throughout the year. Each tour guide is scheduled to work in the office a few Saturday mornings (from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.) each semester.
  • Telecounseling
    Students will have to work some hours on Sunday afternoons calling students at various parts of their admissions process. Gator Guides will be required to work at least 2 phone calling shifts a semester but can sign up for as many as they desire.

Qualifications and Responsibilities

The selection of tour guides is based on the following considerations.

  • Application and references
  • Interviews and personal characteristics
  • Campus involvements and ability to be an ambassador for Allegheny
  • Academic record and ongoing academic standing; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Attention to detail, dependability, organizational skills
  • Both work-study and non work-study students are welcome to apply
  • Preference will be given to freshmen and sophomores; students in their fifth year of study are not eligible

2. Your reference may be an Allegheny professor or any other member of the Allegheny community who could speak on your behalf. Recommendation letters are not necessary.
