Facilities & Strengths

Student access to all departmental facilities and equipment is the rule at Allegheny, producing research opportunities usually reserved for graduate students at other institutions.

  • Steffee Hall of Life Sciences, Doane Hall of Chemistry, and Carr Hall (Physics and Environmental Science) are state-of-the-art facilities, featuring combined classroom/laboratory spaces, greenhouses, darkrooms, cold rooms, aquatics laboratory, tissue culture room, digital imaging laboratory, and student and faculty research areas adjacent to faculty offices.
  • All equipment is available for student use including: laminar flow hoods, gradient and real-time thermalcyclers, research-grade dissecting & compound microscopes with fluorescence optics capability, digital imaging equipment, plate readers, electroporators, luminometer & scintillation counter, UV-visible and Nanodrop spectrophotometers, SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), gas and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometer capability, microwave reactors, stopped flow apparatus, atomic absorption spectrometer, a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR), an electron spin resonance spectrometer (EPR), Fourier transform infrared spectrometers, and a Raman spectrometer.
  • Extensive computer and projection facilities in classrooms and laboratories are an integral part of introductory and advanced courses.
