The Institutional Review Board (IRB) has overall responsibility for ensuring that research conducted with human participants, regardless of whether the research is sponsored by Allegheny College faculty, students, or administrators or is conducted at Allegheny College, complies with Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requirements, specifically the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 45, Part 46. Allegheny College is registered with the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) which is part of HHS.

As part of its responsibilities, the IRB is charged with ensuring that all persons involved in human research are trained in both the ethical principles outlined in the Belmont Report and the specific requirements of CFR 45, title 46. To that end, Allegheny College has contracted with CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) to provide an online training course which must be completed by the principal investigator (PI) and all research collaborators/assistants before submitting a research proposal.

The FAQ tab answers many common questions about the IRB. The forms for submitting research to the IRB can be accessed through the navigation buttons on the right or here.

Steps in submitting a proposal:

1. Ensure that current OHRP certification(s) are on file.

All information should be submitted to the chair of the IRB electronically from the PI (or faculty supervisor if the PI is a student). All forms are available as Google documents. However, after all the forms have been completed, they should be converted to PDF files before they are submitted to the IRB as email attachments. For information on converting Google Docs to PDF files, please click here. The Submission Instructions may also be accessed through the Forms Tab above or on the navigation buttons to the right.

2. If an exemption is requested, please submit a completed Exemption Request form and provide information as to why the research is exempt from IRB review.

3. Otherwise, submit a completed Review Request form, an Informed Consent form, and a Debriefing form.

4. An incident report must be filed with the IRB for any injury (physical or psychological) or any deviation from an approved procedure. If there are no such incidents, a final incident report must be filed at the conclusion of data collection.

Please contact Janine Sickafuse, Chair of the IRB, at 332-3341 or janine.sickafuse@allegheny.edu if you have any questions.
