“Post Soviet Landscapes”

DATES: May 15—June 4, 2018
TAUGHT BY: Ken Pinnow

Experience history in the making through a comparative study of the challenges
facing newly independent nations since the collapse of the USSR, such as the
struggle to create national histories and the challenges posed by the legacy of
Soviet rule. Issues considered include political upheaval, environmental
degradation, “frozen conflicts,” socioeconomic transformations, cultural
ambiguities, and public health. We will have daily interactions with scholars and
students in Kyiv and Chisinau, visit the Chernobyl nuclear accident zone, see
historical landmarks, and travel to politically and culturally significant regions.
