“Health, Education, and Poverty: Social Issues in Nicaragua”
Kirsten Peterson & Michaeline Shuman

Description

This 2 credit Seminar is an international service-learning course that includes a 13-day immersion experience in Nicaragua. Prior to the trip students will be expected to learn key events in the history of Nicaragua from the 1900’s to the present, have a basic understanding of the culture, and study a variety of social issues facing Nicaraguans, especially those without access to adequate health care. While in Nicaragua, students will work at “Project Chacocente” a resettlement project for families previously living in Managua’s garbage dump. In addition, there will be a series of lectures on course related topics by experts or scholars in Nicaragua.
