Ukraine
“Transitions from Communism: A Case Study of Ukraine”
Instructor: Kenneth Pinnow
Description
How do a people become a nation? What are the legacies of communism in Europe? Students seek to answer these questions by exploring the Ukraine that has emerged 20 years after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Particular emphasis is placed on the creation of a Ukrainian national history and how the Ukrainian people are dealing with the legacies of Soviet rule-political change, environmental degradation, socioeconomic transformations, and cultural ambiguities. Based in Kiev, we have daily interactions with scholars and students, visit the Chernobyl nuclear accident zone, see historical landmarks and cultural events, and travel to the Lviv and the culturally contested region of Crimea.
