Germany and the Reformer: Martin Luther’s Effects on German Nationalism from the Protestant Reformation

Abstract:

The basis of this analysis is looking at Martin Luther during the Protestant Reformation. Specifically there is an in-depth look into the utilization of the print culture, which was developed by the invention of the printing press a century before Luther. The print culture included Luther’s religious writings, his Bible, and the plethora of images which were published during the Reformation. Through the investigation of the print culture, the argument states that even though Luther did not purposely meant to – he affected German nationalism. Not only will the analysis delve deep into the German nation from the time of Luther, it will also go against the norm by stating that modern nations began to develop a couple centuries earlier than most scholars believe. In the end, there is much evidence to support that Luther did affect German nationalism and the nation and has continued his influence even now.
