Allegheny College, a small selective national liberal arts college, invites applications for the position of Assistant Garden Educator. The position is a part-time, temporary, non-exempt position reporting to the Wellness Programs Coordinator of the Community Wellness Initiative (CWI). The CWI administers programs that improve access to and knowledge of healthy food in the Meadville community.
The Assistant Garden Educator will work on education programs of the CWI. More specifically, they will work to develop and implement garden and agriculture-based curriculum in the Meadville area. This includes preparing lesson plans, organizing materials needed for lessons, maintaining lesson materials, and supporting teachers who work with the CWI. The Assistant Garden Educator will also work in the community garden where our programs are administered. This includes regular garden maintenance and other projects to further develop the educational components of the garden (i.e. building benches for classroom seating in the garden). Finally, the Assistant Garden Educator will help develop educational programs for our community gardeners.
- At least six months of experience working in an educational setting with students
- Experience in writing and delivering class lesson plans that meet state requirements
- Basic knowledge of growing fruits and vegetables
- Basic knowledge of healthy nutrition and exercise
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with multiple groups of people
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
