JPI Courses for the Fall of 2016

Journ 100: News Writing (C. Hatch) TTh 3-4:15

A beginning level journalism class focused on the writing and gathering of news in an objective manner.  Work often simulates the intense life of the news reporter—writing under short deadlines with extensive research requirements.  Study also stresses fundamental writing skills, such as developing concise language and learning to copy-edit and rewrite.

Journ 320: Beat Reporting (C. Hatch) TTh 9:30-10:45

An advanced news reporting and writing course that focuses on beat reporting. Students will learn to develop sources and story ideas while covering a specific area on campus: science, arts, sports, student government, for example. The goal of assignments will be to publish in The Campus and The Meadville Tribune.

Journ 550 (Junior Seminar): Exposé and Reform (B. Slote and C. Bailey) MW 3-4:15

A study of investigative journalism—both consequential examples of it and the historical, political, and economic forces underlying its production.  An interdisciplinary, team-taught course, this seminar will include independent research projects connected to students’ academic majors.
