Some Windows Text Editors

Windows comes with the text editor Notepad. It is a very limited editor, with few features. If you are looking for something a bit better, here are some suggestions.

UltraEdit

This is the editor being used on the lab and office machines, a shareware text editor ($49.95 to register). This can be configured to run LaTeX, run dvips, call GSView, or call any other program from buttons on the toolbar, but it doesn’t come set up that way. You can find more information, and download a trial version at https://www.ultraedit.com/

WinEdt

This is another shareware text editor ($30 to register a student license) which integrates seamlessly with MikTeX 2.5 and higher.. It comes configured with buttons on the toolbar which will run LaTeX, run dvips, or call GSView. You can find more information, and download a trial version at https://www.winedt.com/

NoteTab Light

NoteTab Light is a freeware text editor. Unless you already have a text editor that you like a lot, it is worth taking a look at. It doesn’t have all the nice features of WinEdt or UltraEdit, but it’s has many more features than Notepad and the price is right! You can find more information, including how to download, at https://www.notetab.ch/ntl.htm.
