“You can tell that all the professors love what they do and enjoy teaching.”

Double majoring in mathematics and philosophy is perfectly logical, according to Brandon Perpich. “Both disciplines require logical thinking to reach clear answers,” he says. “They both concentrate on the mind and knowledge.”

Brandon had always excelled at math in high school but still found it to be a dry subject at times. But the professors at Allegheny have made mathematics come alive, he says. “Here, you can tell that all the professors love what they do and enjoy teaching,” Brandon explains. “They helped me to see the beauty in mathematics and how much fun it could be.”

Eager to delve into research, Brandon has attended the Rice University Summer in Statistics research program and plans to apply to more programs this year.

Although busy with a double major, he’s active on campus. Brandon works as a resident advisor, competes in intramural sports, and was elected vice president for Allegheny Student Government. He is a member of the honorary mathematics society Pi Mu Epsilon, the Philosophical Forum, and the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He also serves as vice chairman for the Armstrong County Youth Commission, a program set up to assign alternative punishments for juveniles who commit crimes.

After graduation, Brandon plans to earn a doctorate in mathematics so that he can someday share his own passion for mathematics with college students.
