“My Allegheny professors were willing to help me comprehend difficult concepts—giving me time to work at my own pace.”
— Jamie Ball

Jamie Ball couldn’t decide whether to major in computer science, political science or religious studies. Then during his sophomore year he found music so enjoyable—playing principal saxophone with three groups and singing in the College Chorus and Choir—he decided to major in music. In fact, he became so serious about music that he left Allegheny to study at a music school.
It wasn’t long before he came back. “It is personal contact with professor-musicians that makes all the difference,” says Jamie. “My Allegheny professors were willing to help me comprehend difficult concepts—giving me time to work at my own pace.”
In addition, Jamie wanted to minor in computer science while taking classes in both religious studies and political science. “I think one of the reasons that Allegheny draws music students is the opportunity to have a well-rounded experience,” he explains. “That’s the beauty of a liberal arts school.”
Jamie has added cello lessons and classes in Greek, and he hopes to take ballroom dancing. He’s also active in Allegheny’s outdoor program—white- water rafting, rock climbing, camping, and hiking.
Recently, Jamie was selected to play first chair in the National Small College Intercollegiate Band. As one of only seventy-two college students chosen to play in the honors band, he performed in New York City at Lincoln Center.
