Reading Group for Natural Science Faculty – Fall 2016

The associate provost would like to invite interested natural science faculty to participate in a reading group focused on enhancing student success in the sciences. A common national theme over the past few years has been a call to increase the number of graduates in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields and to enhance the scientific literacy of students in other disciplines. Achieving these types of goals will require us to harness the potential of all students, forcing us to identify and acknowledge the barriers encountered by students from traditionally underrepresented groups. In an effort to advance this work on campus, participants will read and discuss recent scholarship centered on current and emerging evidence-based teaching practices that promote diversity and equity in the sciences.

Four lunchtime meetings (12:15 – 1:15 p.m., with lunch provided) will take place on the following Thursdays: Sept. 8, Oct. 6, Nov. 3, and Dec.1. A final wrap-up meeting, designed to help participants create individual and collaborative goals for upcoming semesters, will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 9 a.m. – noon. Participants are asked to commit to attending all four lunchtime meetings, plus the wrap-up meeting. Interested faculty members should email Rachel Weir (rweir@allegheny.edu) by June 15, briefly describing their interest in the group and how they hope the work of the group may influence their teaching and/or scholarship. An effort will be made to accept members on a first-come, first-served basis but some adjustments may be made to encourage representation from all of the natural science departments.
