Allegheny College’s Office for Diversity & Inclusion, in conjunction with the Provost’s Office, invites faculty, across divisions, to develop pedagogical strategies for courses meeting the new Power, Privilege, and Difference distribution requirement. This Learning Circle in Fall 2016 will be co-facilitated by Courtney Bailey (associate professor, Communication Arts) and John Christie-Searles (assistant professor, Political Science/Black Studies). The Learning Circle dialogues will focus on pedagogy-based topics such as creating an inclusive learning culture, developing a shared vocabulary for addressing issues of diversity, intersectionality, and privilege, and working for social justice on campus. These discussions will draw from ongoing national debates, classroom experiences, and targeted readings, with the goal of generating concrete and pragmatic group outcomes.

Six Learning Circle sessions will take place from 12:20 to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesdays throughout September and October. These dates are: Sept. 13, Sept. 20, Sept. 27, Oct. 4, Oct. 18, and Oct. 25 with a culminating workshop on Saturday, Oct. 29 designed to help the group produce specific teaching resources and activities. Location: Campus Center 303. Participation will be capped at 10 faculty members, and we ask that participants commit to attending all six sessions plus the follow-up workshop. Lunch will be provided, and all participating faculty will have a formal letter from the Office for Diversity & Inclusion, recognizing their service to advance this strategic priority of the college, placed in their personnel files. If you are interested in participating, please complete the brief PPD Learning Circle Application by 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 1. You will be notified of your acceptance no later than the following Tuesday, September 6. Please direct questions to Courtney Bailey at cbailey@allegheny.edu.
