Students and their families should be aware that starting with the 2017-18 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, there will be two major changes:
1) You’ll be able to submit your FAFSA earlier. Students and parents (as appropriate) will be able to file a 2017-18 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016 rather than January 1, 2017. This earlier submission date will be a permanent change enabling students to complete and submit a FAFSA as early as October 1 every year. To complete the 2017-18 FAFSA click here. (Please note: To receive your maximum financial aid eligibility, please file your FAFSA by Allegheny College’s new priority deadline of February 15, 2017.)
2) Prior-Prior Year (PPY). Students and parents (as appropriate) will report income information from an earlier tax year. For example, on the 2017-18 FAFSA, students and parents will report their 2015 income information rather than their 2016 income information. This change will make the FAFSA easier to complete because you’ll already have done your taxes for 2015 by the time you fill out your FAFSA. This means you won’t have to estimate your income information, and you can automatically import your tax information directly onto your FAFSA using the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).
