On Election Day, we are mindful that for many of us this election season has been particularly troublesome and discomfiting. Its aftermath may be just as, if not more, difficult to navigate. Our shared sense of community can be a source of great comfort, support, and goodwill. It can also provide opportunities for meaningful deliberation and the exchange of competing perspectives. What it must not become is a place of silence and complacency in the face of challenges to that shared sense of community. We invite you to two linked events this Wednesday, November 9, the day after the election. Both will be in the Allegheny Gateway and all faculty, staff, and students who wish to process the election in an open and welcoming space are invited.

The first event will begin at 6:30 p.m. (on the main level) and will be an informal set of discussion sections facilitated by volunteer faculty and staff. The purpose of these small group discussions will be to share our thoughts about the election and its consequences—particularly, though not exclusively, for us as members of this community. After our small group discussions, we will move to the second event upstairs to the Collaboratory for a larger conversation where we expect to share many of the themes discussed in the small groups.
The second event will be facilitated by a new student group, Sustained Dialogues. That group will host a campus-wide discussion in Pelletier Library’s Collaboratory from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The theme of this dialogue will be the current political climate; they will have student moderators prepared to help facilitate. Please consider participating in both events. We look forward to our discussions.
