Apply to Be a Tutor

This post has been archived. Information below may be out of date and/or relate to a past event.

Subject tutors work with students, individually or in small groups, to help them understand subject matter and to help them develop study strategies that lead to long-term success. They are scheduled by the Learning Commons staff to meet with students in the Tutoring Center or by individual appointment.

Tutors can also register for a two-credit tutor training course. Successful completion of this course (16 hours) and 25 hours of supervised tutoring leads to certification by the College Learning and Reading Association. In Fall 2017 this class (FS 290) will meet on Friday afternoons from 2:30 to 3:20.

Job Requirements: This position is open only to those with sophomore or higher status. Students must have earned a B+ or better in any class they would like to tutor and have an overall 2.5 GPA. If contacted by the Learning Commons, students will need to interview and to provide at least two faculty references. Because the number of tutors needed varies by subject and by term, this is not guaranteed employment. Students should not ask faculty for recommendations until they are contacted by the Learning Commons.
