This post has been archived. Information below may be out of date and/or relate to a past event.

Allegheny College is full of folks who were the first in their family to go to college. Were you the first? Fill out this form. At Allegheny, we define first gen to be someone for whom neither parent has completed a four-year degree at the time of student’s matriculation. We are celebrating our achievements! Roughly 18 percent of our students at Allegheny are the first in their family to go to college. Students may not realize that many members of the faculty and staff were the first-generation of their families to attend college as well. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to helping our first-gen students and to celebrating their accomplishments. We applaud the talents, the strength and the determination that first-generation students exercise to succeed in achieving their goals.
The IDEAS Center is launching a “We’re First” initiative to raise the pride of being first and to show everyone how many of us there are! Are you the first in your family to go to college? Pop over to the IDEAS Center and grab a wristband. Wear your wristband during orientation and the first few weeks of classes (and all year if you want to). These wristbands will show incoming first-gen students that we are proud of being first in our family and that we have something in common with their experience. Also, join us for the first “First Gen Welcome Lunch” in the Tippie Alumni Center on Tuesday, September 5, from noon to 1 p.m. Filling out this form will let us know that you are first gen and we will invite you every once and a while to events that you might be interested in.
