What are the legacies of communism in Europe? What does it mean to live in the shadow of Russia and the Soviet past? How do a people become a nation? Explore these and related questions through the EL Seminar “Post-Soviet Landscapes: Ukraine and Moldova after the Collapse of Communism.” The three-week seminar is led by Professor Ken Pinnow and offers a comparative study of Ukraine and Moldova, two former Soviet republics that achieved independence in 1991. Based in Chisinau, Moldova and Kyiv, Ukraine, participants will have daily interactions with scholars and local citizens, visit the Chernobyl nuclear accident zone, see historic landmarks and cultural events, and travel to areas outside the capital cities. Particular emphasis is placed on the construction of national histories, and how Ukraine and Moldova are dealing with the legacies of Soviet rule, including public health challenges, political change, environmental degradation, socioeconomic transformations, and so-called “frozen conflicts.”
An information session will take place from 12:30 to 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, in Arter 209. In addition to answering your questions, Professor Pinnow will provide information about the trip, including details about the application process, itinerary, and program costs. He also will discuss ways that the program can be tailored to meet your particular academic and career interests. If you are unable to attend, please contact Professor Pinnow directly (kpinnow@allegheny.edu).
