EXL 594 Japan (4 course credits): Come and learn about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Japan in this study seminar. Participate in language/culture courses at Tokyo’s Keio University and explore the fascinating subcultural spaces in that global city. Travel by the famous bullet train to various cities and villages selected for the unique window they provide into Japan’s reworking of traditions in response to the forces of globalization.

Visit the art island of Naoshima that has been compared to the game “Myst” translated into real art-life. At Hiroshima, reflect on the reconciliation and peace building in the aftermath of the nuclear bombing, and how this has shaped U.S.-Japan relations. From sampuru (fake food), to”catching” your “nagashi sōmen” with chopsticks (literally “flowing noodles”); from fish auctions at one of the most famous markets to the Japanese 7-Elevens and vending machines like no other; from learning about the historical cultural significance of kimonos to the pastiche of harajuku fashion in Tokyo…and much more. This is an experiential learning study seminar that takes the lid off “kaizen” or the flow of change for the better reflected in the synchronicity of past, present, and future in Japanese culture. Open to all students who meet the college criteria for ELs. No prerequisites.
