MEADVILLE, Pa. – Oct. 2, 2009 – Antaeus Dance, a modern dance company founded by Allegheny College graduate Joan Meggitt, will present MOLT—an evening-length performance about transformation and the power of shared experience—on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Montgomery Performance Space on the Allegheny campus.

Antaeus Dance will also offer a 90-minute master class in modern dance technique, taught by Amy Compton-Schulz, at 3 p.m. in the Montgomery Performance Space.  Admission is free to both the performance and the master class, but space is limited. To make reservations, call Allegheny’s Dance and Movement Studies program office at (814) 332-2813.

MOLT explores the transformation that results from stripping away undesirable habits and patterns to reveal the essence of the individual, a transformation that takes place within a community of participants who travel together from resistance to serenity.  Composer Greg D’Alessio’s original music combines ecstatic rhythms and contemplative melodies into a rich soundscape.

The set, by artist James Longs, provides both a physical home for the performance and a metaphor for the beleaguered psyche.  Mobile components, manipulated by the dancers throughout the performance, will create a shifting landscape that evolves with the dance. Antaeus dancers Compton-Schulz, Marissa Glorioso, Heather Koniz, Sherri Mills and Shanna Sheline will perform, with the choreography highlighting the company’s athletic partnering skills.

Based in Cleveland, Antaeus Dance has established a reputation as an intelligent and daring dance company that creates thought-provoking pieces exploring the intersection of individual expression and collective experience.

Antaeus Dance, which premiered in 2001, actively fosters artistic collaboration across disciplines and supports arts education in the community at large.  The company takes its name from the mythological figure Antaeus, a giant and athlete who gained strength through contact with the earth.  This sense of connection to the earth, of groundedness and weight, is a hallmark of the company’s work.
