MEADVILLE, Pa. – Oct. 6, 2009 – Students at Allegheny College are organizing two philanthropic events – a children’s book drive to benefit the local America Reads program and a cupcakes and milk sale to benefit educational programs for children in India – on Wednesday, Oct. 7 in conjunction with a presentation by Nobel Peace Prize nominee Greg Mortenson.
New or gently used children’s books can be donated to America Reads in the Henderson Campus Center lobby from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 7. Books also can be purchased through Amazon.com and shipped directly to America Reads by visiting www.allegheny.edu/socialchange and clicking on “Get Involved.” America Reads operates through local elementary schools and housing developments to promote literacy, comprehension and reading mentor relationships.
Also in the Campus Center lobby on Oct. 7, cupcakes and milk will be available for purchase for $5 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the bakery window. Sponsored by the student organization Growing Hearts, Growing Minds and Parkhurst Dining Services, the sale will support educational programs for children living in the village of Baste, India.
Mortenson’s multimedia lecture, “Promoting Peace through Education,” about his work establishing schools in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium.
The philanthropic events and Mortenson’s presentation are part of Allegheny’s Year of Social Change, a series of activities, workshops and events aimed at inspiring the campus and community to seek a more just and equitable world. For more information, visit www.allegheny.edu/socialchange.
