MEADVILLE, Pa. – Nov. 4, 2009 – Scott Ables, a member of the national board of directors of the Log Cabin Republicans, will present “Gay Rights and the Republican Party,” a free public lecture, on Monday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Tippie Alumni Center on the Allegheny College campus.
Ables’ presentation is sponsored by the Allegheny College Center for Political Participation.
The public also is invited to attend a dinner at 6 p.m. in the Tippie Alumni Center, prior to the lecture. There is no charge for the dinner, although space is limited and reservations are required by Nov. 13. To register for the dinner, visit cpp.allegheny.edu or call (814) 332-6202.
Log Cabin Republicans is an organization that works within the Republican Party to advocate for equal rights for all Americans, including gays and lesbians. Ables’ lecture will focus on the politics of equal rights today.
“This is an important topic,” said Daniel M. Shea, director of the Center for Political Participation and a political science professor at Allegheny College. “We often think of the gay rights movement as an important issue in most elections, but we rarely think of it in terms of the Republican Party. I am sure Scott Ables’ talk will be illuminating.”
Ables has served as a keynote speaker at national and state conventions sponsored by several organizations, including the American Psychological Association, Volunteers of America and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He is president of the Ventura Group, which provides educational and training services to mental health professionals and educators in the U.S. and Canada.
