Award-winning Investigative Journalist to Present Lecture

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Nov. 24, 2009 – Award-winning journalist and editor Maximillian Potter will deliver a free public lecture, “Investigative Journalism: What it is and how it will (and won’t) change,” on Monday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Quigley Hall auditorium on the Allegheny College campus.

Potter, a 1993 graduate of Allegheny, is executive editor of Denver’s city magazine, 5280. During his tenure, the magazine has received several City and Regional Magazine Awards, has been a Livingston Award finalist, and was nominated in 2008 for a National Magazine Award in the category of public interest.

Before joining 5280, Potter was a staff writer at Premiere, Philadelphia and GQ. As a writer, he has been nominated for two National Magazine Awards in the categories of public interest and reporting. In addition, he has been a finalist for the Medill School of Journalism’s John Bartlow Martin Award for public interest journalism and for the prestigious Michael Kelly Award. “Potter’s articles are hard to put down,” noted Kelly Award judges. “They’re beautifully written, ambitious in intent, and—most of all—fearless in their pursuit of truth.”

Potter also has been awarded the City and Regional Magazine Prize in the category of civic interest, first place for domestic coverage in the Military Reporters and Editors Contest, and the Silver Gavel, the American Bar Association’s highest honor for legal reporting in magazines.

Potter, who holds a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University, has spoken at the Denver Press Club and the National Press Club. He also has appeared on television and radio programs including ABC’s “20/20” and Colorado Public Radio’s “Colorado Matters.”

Potter’s lecture is co-sponsored by the Office of the Dean and the Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College. For more information, contact Ben Slote, associate dean of the college, at (814) 332-3391.
