MEADVILLE, Pa. – May 12, 2010 – Allegheny College has signed an agreement to purchase green e-certified wind energy to supply 100 percent of its annual power usage beginning in 2011.

“This single agreement, which immediately eliminates 52 percent of Allegheny’s carbon footprint, takes us halfway toward fulfilling the promise we made when we signed the President’s Climate Commitment in 2007,” said David McInally, Allegheny vice president for finance and planning. “It represents a major step forward for Allegheny and supports our educational mission, campus values, institutional partnerships, operational efficiency and the college’s new 10-year strategic plan.”

To share details of the agreement and of the broad ripple effect that developments in wind energy are creating campus-wide, the college will host a news conference on Monday, May 17 at 11 a.m. in Schultz Hall on the Allegheny campus.

Scheduled to participate in the news conference are: David McInally, vice president for finance and planning, Allegheny College; Kelly Boulton, sustainability coordinator, Allegheny College; Tim Alexander, vice president of finance and administration, Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania; and Carlyn Johnson, Allegheny College environmental science student, who recently completed a wind-energy feasibility study for Saegertown-based Acutec Precision Manufacturing and was awarded a prestigious Udall Scholarship.

The presentation is expected to last approximately 30 minutes and will be followed by a question-and-answer period and a light lunch.
