Allegheny College Art Galleries To Show Annual Faculty and Alumni Exhibit

Sept. 19, 2012 – The art galleries of Allegheny College will present the college’s annual faculty and alumni exhibit from Tuesday, Oct. 2, through Sunday, Oct. 21. A reception will be held in the galleries from 7 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 2, with a panel discussion by the art department’s studio art faculty. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.

The exhibit will feature a variety of artworks, including drawings, paintings, sculpture, interactive pieces, photographs, computer art, textiles and public art projects.

In addition to work by faculty artists, the exhibit will include work by Allegheny alumna Erin Rachel Hudak, a mixed media artist based in New York who works with ideas of freedom, power and entrapment. Hudak has been awarded grants for her ephemeral public sculptures “Love You Forever,” installed under the Manhattan bridge, and “Everything Is Fine,” installed in the historic Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn.

Allegheny faculty represented in the show will exhibit a wide range of work. Professor of Art George Roland will exhibit a series of computational art pieces. Adjunct Instructor of Art Rich Sayer will present photographic works captured on his iPhone.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art Valerie Gilman will show organic, abstract and representational ceramic sculptures. Assistant Professor of Art and Gallery Director Darren Lee Miller will present photographs and other works that explore responsibility and relationships, as well as images taken while on a trip to Morocco sponsored by the Middle East and North Africa Program.

Professor of Art Sue Buck will exhibit a selection of handcrafted clothing items. Professor of Art Amara Geffen will present selected post-sabbatic sculptural works. Associate Professor of Art Richard Schindler will show pencil illustrations. Adjunct Instructor of Art Daniel Schank will exhibit a series of paintings.

Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Communication Arts Cheryl Hatch will show a number of images from her photojournalism assignments in the Middle East. The theatre department’s costume supervisor and designer, Miriam Paterson-Smith, will show paintings.

Presentation of the exhibitions is supported in part by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania’s General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Arts Council of Erie.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. The art galleries are closed October 6-9 for the college’s fall break. Visitors are asked to call ahead to verify hours, since programs are subject to change. All events are free and open to the public.

The Art Galleries, which are wheelchair accessible, are located in Doane Hall of Art, east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville.
