June 11, 2013 – Creating Landscapes, a three-week summer program for intergenerational learners that emphasizes the arts and sciences, is celebrating its 24th year at Allegheny College in July.

The program, which runs July 8-26, has classes for children and teens from age 3 to senior high school level. The program is theme-based and focused toward “serious play”: forming questions, making connections and finding expression. This year’s theme is Mystery.

Four programs are offered: pre-kindergarten, for 3- to 5-year-olds with no kindergarten experience, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; a novice program, for 5- to 7-year-olds with kindergarten experience, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; two different sessions of a players program, for 8- to 12-year-olds, one session from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and the other from 1:15 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday; and an apprentice program, for middle and senior high school students from 1:15 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In its first year, in summer 1990, Creating Landscapes – then called Children’s Creative Arts — attracted 30 children ages 5 to 10 and employed one Allegheny student intern.

The curriculum has expanded every year since then, and additional age groups were added to the student population. The 21 faculty members for this year’s program include teachers and staff from Allegheny College, Gannon University, the Crawford Central and PENNCREST school districts, and Linesville High School, as well as other members of the local community. Many have been teaching with Creating Landscapes for years.
