Nonprofit Agencies Can Apply for Partnerships with College’s Davies Community Service Leaders

Sept. 3, 2013 — Allegheny College is soliciting proposals from nonprofit agencies in the Meadville area to become partners in the Davies Community Service Leader Program. An Allegheny student who has been accepted as a Davies Leader will be placed at each partner site and will complete 600 hours of service at that site.

The Davies Community Service Leader Program, created by the Davies family, is a long-term compensated service opportunity for Allegheny students. Lew Davies, a 1940 graduate of Allegheny, worked his way through college and returned to Meadville following his service in World War II. A successful businessman and community leader, as well as an active alumnus and trustee of the college until his death in 2003, Davies continually sought to build connections between the college and the community.

The Davies Program blurs the lines between Allegheny College and the greater Meadville community by engaging student leaders with local businesses and organizations through project-based initiatives. Davies Leaders use the knowledge they gain from being immersed in the community to spread awareness among their peers about the history, community spirit, people and places of Meadville, which students identify as their home during their four years at Allegheny.

To be considered for the program the agency must complete a project proposal outlining a distinct project that supports civic vitality and/or civic renewal, has a meaningful and measurable outcome and offers a clear structure for supervision.

At this time the program is seeking seven Davies Community Service Leader sites for “school year only” positions. These positions complement seven Davies leader positions that include a summer in addition to a school year.
