Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar David P. Forsythe To Lecture on International Human Rights

March 31, 2014 – David P. Forsythe will give a lecture titled “International Human Rights: 1945-2013” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8 in the Tillotson Room of the Tippie Alumni Center at Allegheny College. Forsythe will spend two days at the college through the Visiting Scholar Program of Phi Beta Kappa.

Forsythe will be visiting classes and meeting with Allegheny students and faculty in addition to his lecture, which is open to the public. His visit to Allegheny is also part of the college’s Year of Civil Rights.

Forsythe is University Professor and Charles J. Mach Distinguished Professor of Political Science, Emeritus at the University of Nebraska. His work focuses on international human rights, international law and organization, American foreign policy and international relations.

His publications include “The Humanitarians: The International Committee of the Red Cross,” “Human Rights in International Relations,” “The United Nations and Changing World Politics,” “American Foreign Policy in a Globalized World” and “The Politics of Prisoner Abuse.” He is the general editor of “The Encyclopedia of Human Rights.”

He is a recipient of the Quincy Wright Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association-Midwest and a Distinguished Scholar Award from the American Political Science Association (Human Rights Section). He was also named a Distinguished Scholar by the International Studies Association (Human Rights Section). In 2008 he held the Senior Fulbright Distinguished Research Chair for Human Rights and International Studies at the Danish Institute for International Studies.

The Phi Beta Kappa Society’s Visiting Scholar Program offers undergraduates the opportunity to spend time with some of America’s most distinguished scholars. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest academic honor society. Allegheny College was granted a charter to establish the Eta of Pennsylvania chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 1902.
