Spring Dance Concert at Allegheny College To Showcase Student Performers

April 3, 2014 — Allegheny Dance and Movement Studies will present the program’s annual spring concert at 8 p.m. on April 10, 11 and 12 in the Montgomery Performance Space at Allegheny College. The concerts are free and open to the public.

This year’s program will highlight student performers in several dance styles, ranging from experimental contemporary to ballroom. Many of the dances will be accompanied by live music.

Betsy Sumerfield’s “Just Because” is an ensemble piece to the second side of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” performed live by John Hyatt and friends. James Reedy has worked with student KC Krason on a striking solo titled “Crossing” that explores movement of the upper body with a more bound lower body.

Performers in “Movement Rights: Voices of Embodying Democracy” collaborated with Eleanor Weisman as well as musicians Hyatt and saxophonist Mikel Prestor for a statement on the struggle for civil rights, the college’s theme for the year.

Jacquelyn Shannon, who graduated from Allegheny College in 2010, will perform with community member Doug Lodge in a butoh-inspired piece on the theme of justice.

Sumerfield will present her advanced ballroom dancers in three pieces. She also gives the audience a unique view of what goes on backstage at a dance performance.
