Allegheny College Senior Crystal Stone Earns Good Citizen Scholarship

Aug. 21, 2014 – Crystal Stone, a senior at Allegheny College, is one of only nine students at private colleges to receive a 2014-2015 Commonwealth Good Citizen Scholarship from the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) Foundation.

The scholarship, a $1,500 award from the AICUP Foundation to students who demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to community service, is awarded to full-time students with a GPA of at least 3.0 who are enrolled in an undergraduate program at one of AICUP’s 88 member institutions.

Stone, who is from Pottstown, Pa., is majoring in English at Allegheny College, with a minor in psychology.

She was recognized for a number of community service projects. During winter break, Stone led a group of students on a two-week service trip during which they volunteered on a farm through the WWOOF network, which connects people who want to live and learn on organic
farms with people who are looking for volunteer help. Stone and her group worked on an organic coffee farm and funded their trip through activities that included a lemonade stand, a raffle and yardwork.

In 2013 she also participated in the Cranks Creek Alternative Spring Break trip, working with other Allegheny students on housing rehabilitation and homelessness prevention in a rural area of Kentucky.

In addition, Stone has volunteered as a writing consultant in Allegheny College’s Learning Commons and tutored an adult learner through the Crawford County READ Program. Through the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, she designed a high school poetry contest and assisted with the Better World Books Drive, which raises funds for nonprofit literacy initiatives and libraries worldwide.

Stone is serving as president for Allegheny’s chapter of Sigma Tau Delta and as student representative for the Eastern region.

She plans to pursue a career in teaching when she graduates in December.
