Allegheny College Art Galleries To Present “8 Hour Projects”

Aug. 25, 2014 — The art galleries of Allegheny College will present “8 Hour Projects” on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free for this annual event, which features 13 artists making art on site with the public invited to observe.

This year’s artists, who have been invited to consider themes of loss and change, are Rafael Abreu-Canedo, John Bavaro, Julia Betts, Heather Brand, John Garrett, Darren Lee Miller with Ricky Gindlesberger and Miriam Patterson, Lucia Nhamo, Steve Prince, Byron Rich, Ian Thomas and Jeff Willis. Each of the artists, who work with a variety of materials, has been assigned a wall or floor space of approximately 12 x 12 feet.

“Work-in-Progress Day is always crowded, with people dropping in throughout the day to see how ideas evolve—over the course of eight hours—to become completed artworks,” said gallery director Darren Lee Miller, who serves as curator for the exhibit. “The event is appropriate for people of all ages and is especially fun for young, aspiring artists. It’s an opportunity not only to observe but also to participate if the artist so desires.”

An opening reception for the show will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 8 to 9 p.m. in the Art Galleries. A panel discussion in Doane Hall A104 will precede the reception at 7 p.m. Works will remain on display through Sunday, Sept. 21.

This exhibition is supported in part by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12:30-5 p.m.; Saturday, 1:30-5 p.m.; and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. Visitors are asked to call ahead to verify hours, since programs are subject to change. All events are free and open to the public.

The Art Galleries, which are wheelchair accessible, are located in Doane Hall of Art, east of North Main Street between College and John Streets in Meadville.
