Ribbon-cutting Ceremony for New Bicentennial Plaza Will Be Highlight of Allegheny College Homecoming

Oct. 14, 2014 — Allegheny College will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its Bicentennial Plaza at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, during the college’s Homecoming Weekend.

“Just as Allegheny was founded by Timothy Alden and Meadville citizens, we’ll continue our Bicentennial celebration on October 17 with an emphasis on community,” said Allegheny president James H. Mullen Jr. “We’re delighted that local leaders and other community friends can join us for this special celebration of 200 years of academic excellence.”

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will feature music by the college’s Choir and Jazz Band.

The Bicentennial Plaza provides a space in front of Schultz Banquet Hall that can be used for any number of activities, including talks, plays, concerts and other special events, including Commencement.

When the Class of 2015 becomes the first class to graduate from the Bicentennial Plaza, they will process through Bentley Hall and then along the college’s new Historic Walkway, which is lined with 43 cast-bronze plaques that celebrate milestones in Allegheny’s history.

On Saturday, Oct. 18 beginning at noon, a special bicentennial-themed Homecoming parade will revive the campus tradition of floats, with the parade progressing from campus up Park Avenue to the Robertson Athletic Complex. In addition to the Homecoming football game against Oberlin at 2 p.m., the women’s and men’s soccer teams and women’s volleyball team will compete at home. Also on Saturday six Allegheny athletes will be inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
