Allegheny graduate reflects on recent turmoil in France

Nearly one year ago, United’s Randi Smail embarked on a four-month stint of study in France, a time interspersed by exploration of the country’s historical and cultural riches, along with those offered in seven other nations throughout Europe.

The much-publicized terrorist acts, which occurred there in early January, left Smail — a 2009 Mt. Pleasant Area graduate — shocked and saddened, she said.

However, the threat of terrorism has not diminished Smail’s desire to one day return overseas, she said.

“I am a huge advocate of traveling and studying abroad, and I see it only as something that helps the travelers and adventurers, if they are open to the challenge,” said Smail, 24, who, in December, graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international studies.
