Allegheny College To Host Community Celebration on the Diamond to Commemorate Its Founding 200 Years Ago

June 10, 2015 – The Meadville community is invited to a celebration at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 at the Founders House in Diamond Park to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of Allegheny College.

On June 20, 1815, the Reverend Timothy Alden and citizens of Meadville, then a frontier town, met to sign a document declaring their purpose in establishing a college and appointing Alden president and professor of Oriental languages and ecclesiastical history.

A short ceremony will take place at the site of the original log courthouse where Alden and Meadville citizens met to sign the statement of purpose.

The Concert Band of Northwest Pennsylvania, under the direction of John Fleming, will perform a free concert on the Diamond beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program, “West of the Alleghenies,” will feature the premier performance of “An Allegheny Repertory” composed by Bryan Lewis.

Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the performance. The ceremony will take place at the Founders House rain or shine. In the event of rain, the band will perform at Shafer Auditorium on the Allegheny College campus.
