Oct. 12, 2015 – Sue E. Steven of Coronado, California has been elected to the Allegheny College Board of Trustees. Steven, who was sworn in on Oct. 10, will serve a four-year term.

A 1975 graduate of Allegheny College, Steven majored in biology. She went on to earn a master’s degree from Colorado State University, a doctorate from the University of Maryland and an executive MBA from Temple University.

Steven began her career as a research associate at Oregon State University, which took her on board research vessels operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard.

In 1979 she left academia and signed on with the U.S. Navy, earning a spot as one of the first women to serve aboard Navy ships. She later became the first female navigator and operations officer on the U.S.S. Hunley. Steven then joined the Medical Service Corps as a microbiologist. She later did work as a medical intelligence analyst and served at the Navy Medical Research Institute.

In 1990 Steven left the Navy to manage medical technologists for what is now GlaxoSmithKline, where she was instrumental in arranging internships for Allegheny College students. Six years later, she transitioned to project and portfolio management in the pharmaceuticals industry.

She now owns Mergellina Designs, a San Diego based company that provides entrepreneurial and technology coaching.

The Allegheny College Board of Trustees is the governing body elected to oversee the college. The board’s primary responsibilities relate to policymaking and sound management of the college’s resources.
