Allegheny College Places Seventh in New Ranking of Psychology Programs

December 2, 2015 – Allegheny College has been ranked seventh among the top “up and coming” undergraduate psychology programs in the East by the organization Best Psychology Degrees.

Among the criteria used to determine the ranking were innovative instructional methods, such as experiential learning; research, internship and study-abroad opportunities in psychology; use of cutting-edge technological resources; recent additions and renovations to facilities; and what Best Psychology Degrees calls the “wow” factor.

“The psychology department at Allegheny College has a long history of preparing students for many post-graduate opportunities including graduate study or work in research, counseling, human resources and much more,” said Aimee Knupsky, associate professor of psychology and chair of the psychology department at Allegheny College.

“Our students have access to a creative and engaged faculty, a broad range of labs and a well-established set of internship opportunities in the Meadville community,” Knupsky said. “We encourage students to become active participants in the field from their first years and guide them toward conducting their own independent research.”

Katie Roach, a senior from Pittsburgh, is a double major in neuroscience and psychology. In addition to completing internships at the Medical University of South Carolina and Bethesda Youth Services in Meadville, she spent a semester studying at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom.

“Allegheny’s psychology faculty have a steadfast commitment to providing opportunities for student research and student development,” Roach said. “The faculty and staff in this department are some of the most supportive and diligent professionals that I have had the privilege to work with.”

Best Psychology Degrees notes the importance of Allegheny College’s senior comprehensive project, a significant piece of original work, designed by the student and a faculty advisor, that demonstrates to employers and graduate schools the ability to complete a major assignment, to work independently, to analyze and synthesize information and to write and speak persuasively.
