PNC Foundation Awards Grant to Fund Scholarships at Allegheny College

Dec. 17, 2015 – Allegheny College announced today that it has received a $200,000 grant from the PNC Foundation that will be used to fund more scholarships for students who otherwise might not be able to attend the nationally acclaimed liberal arts college.

“An investment in a student’s education yields significant benefits for many years, as students graduate and become leaders in their communities and professions,” said Marlene Mosco, regional president of PNC Bank in Northwest Pennsylvania. “Many of Allegheny’s students choose to remain in the region after graduation and contribute to the vitality and well-being of our communities in Erie and Crawford counties.

“PNC has a longstanding relationship with Allegheny College,” Mosco said. “In fact, our chairman, president and CEO, Bill Demchak, is an Allegheny alumnus.”

The grant, which comes as the college celebrates its 200th year, will be added to an endowed fund established in 1986. Awards from the PNC Bank Scholarship Fund have helped 14 students complete their educations at Allegheny so far. This grant will make more scholarships available to students in the future.

“Allegheny has a proud tradition of being accessible to any student who is qualified to enroll. Because many of our students come from families who are struggling financially, we search for ways to help these students pursue their aspirations for an Allegheny education,” said James H. Mullen Jr., the college’s president. “We are grateful to the PNC Foundation for helping to make dreams come true for future generations of students who will benefit from this generous grant.”

Megan Arnold, a first-year student from Burton, Ohio, received the PNC Bank Scholarship this year. She is a chemistry major and psychology minor with plans to attend graduate school in a medical scientist training program to pursue a career in medical research.

PNC Bank officials and Allegheny administrators gathered in the college’s Gateway academic center today to unveil a plaque commemorating the gift.

The PNC Foundation, which receives its principal funding from the PNC Financial Services Group (NYSE: PNC), actively supports organizations that provide services for the benefit of communities in which it has a significant presence. The foundation focuses its philanthropic mission on early childhood education and community and economic development, which includes the arts and culture.
