Frequently Asked Questions from Parents and Families

Is Orientation required for parents?

Attending Orientation is recommended but not required for parents. Some parents choose to help their student get settled then leave campus right away. Some choose to stay through the Matriculation ceremony. You are welcome to choose whatever works best for you and your family.

Should my student bring a computer to campus?

Allegheny has a large number of public computers on campus, so it is not required that students bring computers with them. If your student would like to bring their own computer, general information about what kind to buy and what kind of accessories they would need can be found here.

What should I do if my student is flying to Pennsylvania without me?

You can find information about flying to Pennsylvania for Orientation here. There will be hundreds of volunteers on campus during move-in ready to help your student move into their new room and find their way around campus

What should we buy for my student’s room?

A sample packing list can be found here. The most important items are: pillow, extra long twin sheets, a comforter, a fan (no air conditioners!), school supplies, summer/fall clothes and toiletries. Information about room dimensions will be included in your student’s room assignment letter that they will receive from Residence Life in mid-July, so you might want to hold off on buying area rugs or window dressings until then.

If we are flying, what should we do about getting bigger items for my student’s room?

Items like comforters, towels, pillows, etc. can be purchased at WalMart in Meadville, or you can buy these items online and ship them to Allegheny. The campus post office and bookstore will be open the weekend of Orientation so you can pick up anything you ship or buy items you have forgotten. To ship items to your student, send the packages to:

Name
Allegheny College Box # (post office box information can be found on their WebAdvisor account)
520 N. Main Street
Meadville, PA 16335

How do I help my student set up a bank account in Meadville?

There will be representatives from several local banks in the Campus Center during move-in (Saturday, Aug. 25th) to help students set up accounts. PNC Bank will also be there to help set up bank accounts and explain to you how students can access their PNC account through their Allegheny AllCard.

Can I help my student register for classes at Allegheny?

While you are encouraged to talk with your student over the summer about what classes they are considering for the fall semester, it is not recommended you include yourself on your student’s advising phone call. Students will be mailed information about available courses and learn more about Allegheny’s academic programs by looking through the College Catalogue. Your student will have a full Fall 2012 schedule at the completion of their call with their entrance advisor.

I am filling out my student’s forms and can’t find their ID number. How can I get it?

We do not encourage parents to fill out students’ forms for them. You should be there to point your student in the right direction if they have a question about their forms, but they should be taking care of these deadlines themselves. We will not give ID numbers, usernames or passwords out over the phone. If your student has lost this information, they should call the Learning Commons at (814) 332-2898 and they will be mailed a new letter with that information.

My student is a varsity athlete playing a fall sport and has to move in before August 25th. What do I do about Orientation?

If your student was recruited to play football, soccer, volleyball or cross country, they may be moving in early for preseason. If you are unsure when your student is supposed to move in, you should contact their coach or the athletic department (814-332-2154). If your student does move back early, they will still participate in Orientation with the rest of the Bicentennial Class of 2015 and will receive instruction from their coach as to when they will participate in team activities. As a parent, you are welcome to come back to campus for the first 24 hours of Orientation, which are designed for students and families, but you are not required to do so.
