What to Pack?

Many students and parents are stumped when it comes to packing for college.  Whether you are coming from Pittsburgh or Paris, here is a list of things current Allegheny students have found they can’t live without:

For you room:

Social security card, birth certificate (for your W4 and I9 forms if you plan to get a job on campus)
Pillow
Extra long twin sheets
Bedspread
Alarm clock
Dish/glass/silverware
Flashlight
First aid kit
Laundry supplies
Summer/fall clothes (don’t pack for the whole year!)
One “dressy” outfit (for presentations)
Lamp (compact fluorescent light bulbs are available on campus)
Fan
Hangers
Towels
Shower caddy
“Shower shoes” (flip flops)
Wastebasket
Cell phone charger
Storage containers for under the bed (Rubbermaid, Tupperware, etc)

Discuss with your roommate(s):

TV
DVD player
Rug
Minifridge
Microwave
(no room needs two TVs, two microwaves, etc…it will just waste energy!)

For class:

Pens/Pencils
Calculator
Notebooks
Folders/binders
Index cards
Ruler
Scissors
Stapler
Backpack
Laptop/desktop (not necessary, but convenient) – visit the ITS website for information about what kind of computer to buy and what accessories you’ll need.
Jump/flash/thumb drive

Most students we talked to shopped for Allegheny at Target, WalMart, Fred Meyer and online.  If students wait to buy things until they get to Meadville, their choices will be the Allegheny bookstore, WalMart, Kmart, online shopping, and local stores.

Do not pack:

Clothes you haven’t worn in the past 6 months (you won’t start wearing them just because you’re going to college!)
Air conditioner
Halogen lamp
Pets (except fish)
Toaster oven
Candles/incense
Space heater
Hot plate
George Forman grill (or similar grills)
Weapons of any kind (paintball guns, airsoft guns, knives, etc)
