The Truman Scholarship
Scholars receive $15,000 for the first year of graduate study and $15,000 for the final year of graduate study. Scholarships are awarded to rising college seniors who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service. Scholars will be required to work in public service for three of the first seven years following completion of a Truman-funded graduate degree program.
Selection Criteria
- Excellent academic performance, writing and analytical skills.
- Extensive records of public and community service.
- Committed to careers in government or public service.
- Outstanding leadership potential and communication skills.
- Sustainable proposed program of study for a career in public service
Nature of the Award
- $2000 for senior year of undergraduate education and graduate studies
- Up to $30,000 for graduate study toward a public service-related degree.
Nature of the Scholarship
- Juniors with exceptional potential who are committed to careers in govt, non-profit or advocacy sectors, education or other public service. Support is for leadership training and fellowship with like-minded students.
- Eligibility: US citizens or nationals; full-time students in junior year and who expect to graduate the following year. (Residents of Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa or Marianas must be in Sr year).
Competitiveness
Highly: 200 finalists are select nationally for interviews. 1 candidate is awarded the scholarship per state per year.
Application Process/Deadline
Applicants must receiv an institutional nomination (Limited to 4 per year) by February 6th. An interview with Howard Tamashiro will be conducted within 2 weeks of receiving nominations. Nominees will be sent an email from the Foundation with instructions on how to apply; sample application is available on official website. Draft of application materials due to Howard Tamashiro by December 1st for submission by the February deadline.
