From her experience as a student and resident advisor, then resident director, to her time as dean of admissions and enrollment management, to her role as a volunteer and leader, she has been a shining example of commitment and service to the College.

As a volunteer, she has helped the Admissions Office with the Gator Greetings initiative and by interviewing prospective students. She also volunteers to assist current students as a career mentor. She has helped with alumni relations efforts, expressing appreciation to supporters of the College through phone calls and personal notes, hosting alumni events, and soliciting gifts as a class agent.

As a leader, Megan served seven years on the Alumni Council, including a year as president. During that time, the council was deeply involved in planning the College’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2015, developing the College’s strategic plan, Combinations 2020, and was involved in the run-up to the launch of the current comprehensive fundraising campaign, Our Allegheny: Our Third Century Quest. As an officer of the Alumni Council, Megan attended Board of Trustees meetings for two years, and she was co-chair of her 25th Reunion Committee.

For the past three years, she has served on the Timothy Alden Council Executive Committee to help expand the College’s pool of leadership-level donors, which provides a stable foundation of financial support for Allegheny. She has been the chair of a working group focused on recruitment of new Timothy Alden Council members.

“Through my time working with Megan, I have learned that she is an incredible force for Allegheny, driven by her deep love and appreciation for her alma mater,” says Sara Pineo, the College’s director of annual giving. “She fully uses her talents, experience, and her ability to network to advance the College’s mission.

“What I most appreciate about Megan is that she is a true ally and partner,” Pineo says. “She comes to the table with thoughtful ideas and creative solutions, and does so with sensitivity and understanding. He was a founding member of the Association of Black Collegians, known today as the Association for the Advancement of Black Culture. He is also a proud member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he served on the Arch Chapter governing board as the director of education.

He was hired by the late Dick Stewart as Allegheny’s first director of admissions for minority recruitment. After two years at the College, he returned home to earn his master’s degree in higher education administration from Kent State University. From there, he moved to Michigan, where he served at Eastern Michigan University as dean of students and university ombudsman, at Kettering University as director of admissions and corporate specialist, and at Washtenaw Community College as director of enrollment services.

As a member of the Ypsilanti community, Gregory has served on many local boards, including Hope Medical Clinic, which provides medical services to indigent families, the Dispute Resolution Center, which provides mediation services to residents, and the Ypsilanti Area Community Foundation. He has been elected to and served on three local school boards in Washtenaw County: Willow Run Community School Board, Lincoln Consolidated School Board, and the Washtenaw Intermediate School Board. He recently concluded 12 years of service on the Michigan Association of School Boards.

During his career, Gregory established the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center and Advisory Board, the Greek Affairs Office, and the University Ombudsman Office at Eastern Michigan. But it can take determination—and time—to uncover and share, as Professor Emeritus of History Jonathan E. Helmreich certainly knows. Following his retirement from teaching in 1998, Jonathan was asked to serve as College historian by President Richard Cook. As part of his duties, Jonathan embarked on a quest to find the flag that students who made up Allegheny College’s company in the Civil War carried into battle. Three years later, he at last found the long-missing flag rolled in a newspaper shoved in the back of a cupboard in the Pelletier Library. That discovery is just one of the many meaningful ways that Jonathan has brought Allegheny’s ever-unfolding history to life—through his tenacity coupled with grace and affability.

Thousands of Allegheny alumni from the early 1960s through the 1990s knew Jonathan as their professor or academic dean. In more recent years, he has taken on a different yet still visible role with alumni, leading popular historic walking tours of campus during Reunion Weekend and other events. “Jonathan connects with Alleghenians in ways that enliven their interest in the College’s history and strengthen their relationship with their alma mater,” says Phil Foxman ’90, associate vice president for development and alumni affairs. “We are most fortunate that he gives so generously of his time and expertise to help alumni gain deeper appreciation for Allegheny.”

Jonathan has poured his heart, soul, and scholarly acumen into authoring several important books about Allegheny, among them Eternal Hope: The Life of Timothy Alden, Jr. In 2005, Jonathan published his most ambitious volume about the College, the 530-page Through All the Years: A History of Allegheny College, which explores the evolution of Allegheny from its beginnings in the frontier town of Meadville through 2005. When beginning work on Through All the Years, Jonathan encountered what he called in the book’s preface a “historical record that had long been neglected.” He surmounted that obstacle; his skill and persistence resulted in a tome that has become an invaluable resource for College employees and a keepsake for alumni. In 2016, Jonathan published an update to the book, The Next Chapter: Celebrating Allegheny College As It Reaches Its Bicentennial. Jonathan himself contributed immeasurably to the College’s Bicentennial celebration in 2015. For example, he provided vision and insight as a member of the Bicentennial Committee, charged with planning and coordinating events and memorials. And his meticulous research helped to inspire and inform the beautiful Bicentennial Walkway that extends through Bentley lawn.

Jonathan has proven himself a true and most loyal son of Allegheny. They proudly displayed an Allegheny banner in a local restaurant and made a toast to their alma mater with fellow diners. Through their service on numerous reunion committees, Jim and Sandi have also helped to provide a warm welcome on campus for their classmates. With enthusiasm and diligence, they served as co-chairs for their respective 50th Reunion celebrations.

Reunion Weekend holds a particularly special meaning for the couple. Jim and Sandi were both married to Allegheny alumni who passed away—Elsa Held Linaberger ’60 and William S. Smith ’61. During Reunion Weekend 2003, Jim and Sandi met and later fell in love. Jim and Sandi also each helped to inspire children to carry on their Allegheny legacy: Anne Linaberger ’84, Elizabeth Linaberger ’91, and Nicole Smith Manning ’93.

Recognizing the enduring value of the Allegheny experience and what it has meant to their family, the Linabergers have been consistent and generous financial supporters of the College. Together, Jim and Sandi have amassed nearly seven decades of combined giving since the early 1980s (when the College began keeping electronic records of philanthropy).

Simply put, Jim and Sandi relish opportunities to support key initiatives at the College. They each have established endowed scholarships to honor their late spouses, and Jim also has funded a scholarship for first-generation college students. In addition, as members of the Timothy Alden Council, they are key contributors to the Annual Fund; both have provided leadership and insight as part of the council’s Executive Committee.

Jim and Sandi are two of Allegheny’s most loyal alumni, and their dedicated service has motivated scores of Alleghenians to become more involved in supporting the College. And she has stepped forward to introduce new courses that deal with emotionally challenging topics—such as evil, trauma, and discrimination. “She is able to draw students into engagement with those issues in a way that is both respectful but does not back down from the pain inherent in the issues,” says Professor of Psychology Joshua Searle-White. “Her success in working with students is really remarkable.”

In developing (and re-developing) her courses, Dr. Eckstein combines hours of preparation with keen attention to incorporating innovative approaches. She frequently contributes to national conferences on teaching psychology—and then uses what she shares and learns there to enhance and reimagine her work in the classroom. Eckstein has also gained new perspectives on issues she discusses in the classroom through other experiences, including a 2016 Humanity in Action study trip exploring post-genocide reconciliation in Rwanda.

At the heart of Dr. Eckstein’s teaching is a deep concern for her students and their well-being. His knowledge of his field is described as “encyclopedic” by several students and alumni who nominated him for this award.

“Even more impressive, he combines that knowledge with a unique ability to convey it in a way that his students can understand, employing humor, concrete examples, and a penchant for the memorable phrase,” Bradley Burroughs ’02 says. An expert in the New Testament, Dr. Holland teaches a wide range of courses and deftly balances presenting material in a serious, cogent manner with, as Marco Dozzi ’07 says, “a helpful dose of comic relief.” Renowned for his skill as a lecturer, Dr. Holland is equally celebrated for his ability to draw students into the conversation. He is the only Allegheny faculty member, and one of the few from a liberal arts college, invited to teach for “The Great Courses,” a widely recognized multimedia series for lifelong learners. Along with his professional achievements, Dr. Holland has modeled for his students the importance of civic involvement. He has served as a guest preacher at local churches and regularly offers courses on biblical subjects for adults preparing for ministry. When his elected term as a trustee drew to a close in 2012, Allegheny President James H. Mullen, Jr. said to Bob: “Having you and Joyce as a part of this remarkable group has meant a great deal to us over the years, and Allegheny is a better place as a result of our partnership with you.” He remains a trustee emeritus.

As a trustee, Bob served on the Tradition & Transformation Campaign Steering Committee and as chair of the Alumni Affairs and Development Committee. He also served on the Case Statement and Communications Pre-Campaign Planning Committee and as chair of the current Our Allegheny: Our Third Century Quest comprehensive campaign’s Feasibility Study Committee. In addition to his dedicated service as a trustee, Bob has served as a donor relations volunteer and as a member of the panel that screens candidates for the College’s annual Prize for Civility in Public Life. He has written letters to members of the Timothy Alden Council thanking them for their generosity. Throughout the years, Bob has been — and continues to be — a loyal supporter of the Annual Fund. In addition to his Annual Fund gifts, Bob and his wife, Joyce, made a significant commitment to the Admissions Welcome Center project. This generous investment helped transform the Phi Gamma Delta house into what is now the 454 House, a beautiful space that provides a warm welcome for prospective students and families. “In addition to his financial support for the project, Bob was instrumental in working with his fraternity brothers to make the project possible,” says Marjie Klein, senior vice president for Development & Alumni Affairs.

Additionally, Bob is a member of the William Bentley Legacy Society, which recognizes people who have provided for Allegheny College in their estate plans.

Bob graduated from Allegheny with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Just 10 years since earning his diploma here, Kyle Shenandoah is having a major impact on his South Philadelphia community and those who live there.

Kyle has emerged as a new, young, and dynamic civic leader and community organizer. His efforts in addressing community needs have been an invaluable force of change in South Philadelphia, according to Michael C. Bradley, fellow Philadelphia activist and president of the Grays Ferry Civic Association.

After establishing a successful career as a social worker, financial advisor, and teacher, Kyle has turned his focus to addressing urban blight in his neighborhood. “Drawing on his background in finance and community organizing, his goal in community activism is geared toward finding solutions to three central issues of poverty: workforce development, gentrification, and transportation,” says Bradley.

Since 2017, Kyle has been using his personal social media accounts to connect employers and potential employees. He has so far posted over 3,000 job openings and has connected over 4,000 people to jobs. “Although he established a great following online, Kyle saw that the digital divide in his community meant many residents were unable to successfully apply for positions online, and he began the next step of single-handedly organizing job fairs,” Bradley says.

Although Kyle’s first job fair in 2017 was a success, his next career fair in 2018 was a tremendous accomplishment. On June 9, 2018, he partnered with the University of Pennsylvania, the National Workforce Opportunity Network, the Urban League of Philadelphia, and neighborhood nonprofits to organize the largest career fair in South Philadelphia. More than 60 employers were in attendance, and the event had an RSVP list of more than 600 job seekers.

Kyle’s most impactful and recent accomplishment is the successful advocacy of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bus route 49. On February 24, 2019, the bus began its new service route. This accomplishment earned him the 2019 Community Leader Award from the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations and first place for Public Policy and Systems Change at the Philadelphia Innovations Awards by the Social Innovations Journal.

Kyle sits on the boards of numerous community organizations, including one he co-founded, the Tasker-Morris Neighbors Association, which addresses gentrification through regular community meetings and town halls with prospective developers. His active role in addressing gentrification led Kyle to be selected as a speaker for the 2019 TEDx Philadelphia, where he continues to share community conversations and concerns with people outside his community.

Allegheny is proud to present its Gold Citation to Kyle Shenandoah.

Stuart Armstrong ’81

Even as Stuart Armstrong has expertly supported clients as a Certified Financial Planner practitioner, he has also made a meaningful difference by putting his talents to work for the betterment of many communities.

“It’s clear throughout Stuart’s life that volunteering and service to a variety of communities have been at the heart and soul of who Stuart is and what he aspires to, whether it be extending financial planning opportunities to underserved communities or helping secure a voice at the table for advocacy efforts for birds and wildlife,” writes Sarah Thorne-Locke ’81, who nominated Stuart for the Gold Citation.

About five years after his graduation from Allegheny, Stuart began his career in financial planning. In the midst of the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s, he collaborated with staff from New England’s largest AIDS-support organization to create a financial awareness workshop for AIDS patients and volunteers assisting them. He went on to serve as president of the board of directors for another support organization, Positive Directions, helping to guide it to its largest budget, staff size, and population served.

Stuart later served as a board member and the treasurer of PridePlanners, a national nonprofit that extends education and networking opportunities to financial planners who work with LGBTQ clients. He has been a leader in presenting on LGBTQ financial planning topics, speaking at conferences, publishing articles, and being interviewed by the national press. In 2010, Stuart became a liaison between PridePlanners and the Diversity Committee of the Financial Planning Association, the largest membership association of CFPs in the United States, chairing the committee in 2012. In 2013, he was selected to serve on the association’s national board of directors, serving a three-year term advocating for the organization on both the state and federal levels and continuing to address concerns about diversity within the profession.

Currently, Stuart is a member of the CFP Board’s Center for Financial Planning Advisory Council. The council’s work addresses the sustainability of the financial planning profession, including diversity and inclusion, succession planning, and awareness of the profession on college and university campuses. Indeed, Stuart visited Allegheny in September 2018 with Blaine Aikin ’76 to talk with students about potential career paths in their industry.

Reflecting his well-rounded life and a passion since his boyhood, Stuart has taken multiple birding trips in the U.S., as well as Cuba and Colombia. In addition, he was selected for the Advisory Council of the nation’s first Audubon Chapter, founded more than a century ago in Massachusetts.

Stuart is married to Mike Levesque, and they live in Milton, Massachusetts, and Wellfleet, Massachusetts.

Stuart Armstrong exemplifies Allegheny’s mission to promote intellectual, moral, and social development and encourage personal and civic responsibility. She founded the Physical Therapy Program at the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf early in her career and became a board-certified pediatric clinical specialist when that specialty was new.

Cindy has worked diligently to improve the profession of physical therapy. She was appointed as a member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy by two different governors and is currently the chair of the state board. She has been awarded recognition as a member of the Academy of Advanced Item Writers for the National Physical Therapy Exam, which physical therapists take to prove competence. Cindy served as a tenured associate professor and chair in the Graduate School of Physical Therapy at Slippery Rock University, and she has taught at Duquesne and Robert Morris universities.

Despite a busy professional schedule, Cindy has made community and civic service a priority. She guided the Honduras Hope Mission, Inc. to nonprofit status, serves as president of the organization, and has served annually with a medical team in a rural town in Honduras for 14 years. During the February 2019 medical trip, the mission cared for 2,626 individuals. The mission has a full-time presence in the community, distributing water filters and food, and delivering educational support to meet the needs of the most needy Hondurans. Cindy also led an event that raised $47,000 toward building a community center in La Villa de San Francisco, Honduras. The center seeks to increase the educational level of the children and adults in the community, enabling them to become self-sufficient in the modern world. Cindy has made a total of 22 mission trips to Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Peru, and Ukraine, in addition to Honduras.

In 2018, Cindy found time to serve as president or chair of five different professional or service organizations concurrently, and she has served as a member of the McCandless Town Council for 12 years. Cindy has also remained involved with her alma mater, including four years on the College’s Alumni Council. In recognition of her humanitarian and professional efforts, she has received the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association Humanitarian Award, the Federation of State Boards Outstanding Service Award twice, the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association Service Award, and the Junior League of Pittsburgh’s Anne D. Barb’s commitment to Allegheny epitomizes what the Alumni Medal seeks to recognize — a lifetime of dedicated, remarkable and selfless service.”

Barb is involved at every level of the College community. She has served as a class agent for many years, reaching out to classmates to encourage them to engage with the College as volunteers and financial supporters. She has also served as a Career Mentor, providing advice and guidance to help students and alumni in their career development. Barb has written Gator Greetings for numerous years, sending handwritten notes to prospective students extolling the advantages of an Allegheny education.

Barb is a former president of the Alumni Council and provided great vision, direction, and focus during her tenure. She has participated on, and in many cases led, a variety of the Council’s committees and panels, including the Torchbearers Task Force, the Marketing Task Force, the Nomination and Awards Committee, and a group that developed the orientation program for new Council members. She also worked to help evaluate and improve Reunion Weekend for all alumni and make it easier for alumni to volunteer for the College.

During the College’s Tradition & Transformation capital campaign, Barb took on the role of ambassador, helping host campaign events across the country and speaking at those celebrations. She also served on the client committee that planned and oversaw the renovation of the Patricia Bush Tippie Alumni Center, and she co-chaired an effort to solicit current and former Alumni Council and Alumni Congress members for the purchase of the flagpole that stands on the alumni center’s west side.

Barb and her husband, Glenn ’68, have been very generous in their financial support of the College, including Allegheny in their estate plans and most recently making a multi-year commitment to the Annual Fund in honor of their 50th Reunions. “The Hannifords’ bequest is designated for the College’s general endowment, where it will touch every corner of the campus in perpetuity,” says Melissa Mencotti, Allegheny’s director of Gift Planning.

Barb has accomplished all this for Allegheny while also pursuing a lengthy and successful career. She received her doctorate in higher education administration from The Ohio State University and began her career at The Pennsylvania State University in 1979. She subsequently held positions at Ohio State, Kent State University, and then Cleveland State University. She retired from full-time work in 2011 after serving as dean of continuing education at Cleveland State for nine years and remains an adjunct faculty member there.

“Her half-century of leadership, counsel, and personal engagement with fellow graduates, faculty, staff, and undergraduates are a tribute to her alma mater, and she deserves special recognition and thanks,” says former Alumni Council President and classmate Richard W. He directs Allegheny’s curricular and community choral ensembles, as well as the triennial Reunion Choir, among many other responsibilities. A genuine zeal for his discipline, dedication to students, and love for his alma mater drive Niblock’s tireless work.

“His passion for the College is rooted in his gratitude for it showing him the joys of music, conducting, and education,” says Megan Kelly ’18. Niblock works with students from a variety of academic majors who participate in the choral program, and he deeply values the liberal arts experience. That appreciation manifests itself through, for example, having choirs perform music in different languages every semester and teaching the anatomy and acoustics of the human voice. “James teaches his singers not only the mechanics of producing a good ensemble sound, but also the more intangible ideas of musicality and expressiveness,” notes Tamara Lakins, professor of mathematics and longtime member of the College and Community Chorus.

Another chorus member, Assistant Professor of Psychology Ryan Pickering, says that “James is an incredibly committed faculty member at Allegheny who speaks up for those who need help being heard and who has been a wonderful faculty mentor for me.”

To provide a transformative experience for students, Niblock prepares meticulously for rehearsals and courses. He was surprised to learn that, according to the United Nations, India was the most dangerous place in the world to be a girl, with an estimated 200,000 victims trafficked annually. The vast majority of these are girls who come from illiterate, lower caste families. Without an education or vocational skills, experience has shown that, even after rescue, these girls will often return to the sex trade simply to survive.

He made an initial trip to India to learn more and to participate in a sting operation which succeeded in rescuing a 12-year-old girl who was being sold by her family. He joined the College’s Board of Trustees in 2011, providing insights and action on a wide range of committees and other important board initiatives.

“Gary has consistently exemplified what it means to lead with a generous heart,” says Senior Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement Sara Pineo. “He has provided leadership through his generous financial support, as a member of the President’s Society with a giving history spanning more than four decades, as well as through his volunteerism, giving of his time and talents over the years in a number of ways.”

Gary Elliott’s drive to solve problems, collaborate, and give back has strengthened Allegheny today and helped to position the College for an even brighter future.

For example, Gary has made phone calls to donors to express his, and the College’s, gratitude for their support. He has also sponsored several gatherings for Allegheny alumni and friends and helped to guide the development of the case statement for the Our Allegheny: Our Third Century Quest comprehensive fundraising campaign. Notably, Gary has prioritized returning to the Allegheny campus to share his expertise with current students. They have learned from his tremendous example and benefited from his decades of experience in marketing, branding, and international business.

Gary retired as vice president for global brand and marketing communications at Hewlett Packard in 2011, having previously served in marketing leadership roles with Compaq and Ogilvy Mather.

“Having a curious mind is a requisite for anyone in business today,” Gary said in an Allegheny magazine profile. “I think when you have exposure to the kinds of programs that Allegheny offers, it opens up your mind and inspires you to think of different solutions. That curiosity has never left me.”

At Allegheny, Gary has connected with students through the Business & Economics Department as an executive-in-residence, an Executive Roundtable panelist, and a member of the Board of Visitors. Throughout these and other opportunities to mentor students, he has emphasized the importance of corporate social responsibility and expressing one’s personal values through business as a citizen of the world.

After Gary spoke to one of her classes, Professor of Media and Cultural Studies Ishita Sinha Roy noted that he demonstrated to students that “working for a corporation goes beyond marketing and making a buck; it is about thinking of being a good citizen.”

Gary Elliott’s drive to solve problems, collaborate, and give back has strengthened Allegheny today and helped to position the College for an even brighter future. In both word and deed, Gary has proven to be a most loyal and devoted Alleghenian. It is with deep gratitude that we award him the Alumni Medal, the College’s oldest and most prestigious award.

Peggy Toman Siegle ’70

Very few alumni have flamed a torch for Allegheny with the zeal, resolve, and longevity that Peggy has.

Peggy Toman Siegle’s love for her alma mater has burned brightly for more than half a century. Through both insightful words and selfless deeds, her example has stoked a passion for Allegheny College in countless others.

Peggy’s unstinting devotion to Allegheny has resulted in remarkable action. “It’s hard to imagine a more dedicated Gator who has served more broadly or enthusiastically on behalf of the College,” said Greg Ward ’94 and Kurt Foriska ’01. They, like Peggy, have served as president of Allegheny’s Alumni Council. During her seven-year tenure on the council, Peggy also held the posts of secretary, vice president, and past president. Her legacy is one of meaningful progress and enduring impact. Peggy contributed significantly to — and spurred efforts to engage fellow alumni in — initiatives affecting nearly every aspect of the College. From enrollment to diversity to athletics to strategic planning, to name just a few areas, Peggy has made a mark and advanced Allegheny’s mission.

In addition, through Peggy’s leadership, Alumni Council further strengthened its relationship with the Board of Trustees, where council members now serve on several board task forces. She also has worked to involve past members of the council, parents, and a wide range of other individuals in the life of the College.

Peggy has gained admiration not only for the significance of what she has accomplished but the considerate way in which she has accomplished it. “The beauty of her approach is her diplomacy, respectfulness, and inclusion of ideas from both sides of an argument. It is an art lost on most in today’s world,” Ward and Foriska said.

Indeed, Peggy’s engaging and charismatic personality has become a driving force in inspiring Alleghenians to build and sustain connections with each other and the College. Her contagious enthusiasm and unique ability to motivate have benefited her graduating class, for which she has chaired every major reunion. “Her joy and thoughtfulness are overwhelming,” classmate Fred Isaac said. “She is, in short, the community leader for the Class of 1970.”

As co-chair of her 50th Reunion celebration, Peggy and Fred established an endowed scholarship for first-generation college students and encouraged the Class of 1970 to support those students. Peggy, also a first-generation college student, who worked 40-hour weeks at three part-time jobs while pursuing her Allegheny degree, credits Allegheny with setting her on a course to pursue a graduate degree in communication disorders at the University of Vermont. This led to her first career in special education leadership. Following that career, she spent several decades as a development and communications officer for Maine not-for-profit organizations, and also founded the first indoor sports training facility in Maine, Four Seasons Baseball and Softball. Over 20 years ago, as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Maine, she established the Academic Achievement Award, now available to be awarded to a high school junior in every high school in Maine to encourage the study of the liberal arts.

In her home state of Maine and everywhere she travels, Peggy persuasively shares the value of the Allegheny experience with prospective students and families. She even recruited former Alumni Council members to travel to campus to attend admissions weekends as a way to demonstrate the lifelong engagement, care, and commitment of alumni.

Beyond her impressive volunteer service, Peggy has shown her belief in the College as a consistent, generous financial supporter, a class agent, and a member of the William Bentley Legacy Society.

When recounting her Allegheny story, Peggy often tells others how much the College has changed her life. In turn, we embrace this opportunity to recognize how much Peggy has changed the College for the good. Very few alumni have flamed a torch for Allegheny with the zeal, resolve, and longevity that Peggy has. It is with deep gratitude that we award her the Alumni Medal, the College’s oldest and most prestigious award.

Jim Wible ’71 and Norma Klaus Wible ’73

For more than 50 years, Jim Wible ’71 and Norma Klaus Wible ’73 have devoted themselves to making a remarkable difference for Allegheny College in myriad ways — and they show no signs of slowing down.

“These dedicated Alleghenians have served on their Reunion Committees, written notes to prospective students encouraging them to become Gators and to alumni thanking them for their support of the College, hired Alleghenians at American Colors, and, through their membership on the Board of Trustees and Alumni Council, continue to provide critical leadership, guidance, and investment as we tackle challenges and continue to improve how we serve students and alumni,” says Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement Phil Foxman ’90. “Their deep care for people, extraordinary commitment to service, and love for Allegheny are at the heart of their inspiring lifetime of engagement.”

The Wibles continually seek innovative ways to support their alma mater. For example, Jim launched a revolutionary program to hire Allegheny graduates at American Colors Inc., a manufacturer of high-quality liquid pigment systems and intermediates. Jim co-founded the business, served as its president for 43 years, and now is its chairman of the board.

“Jim Wible knew that he had a valuable opportunity to offer Allegheny College students to contribute their budding skills and abilities at American Colors; the challenge was how to draw talent to Sandusky, Ohio,” says Director of Career Education Jim Fitch. “Taking a creative approach, he landed on the idea of recruiting groups of friends who were in their senior year to fill multiple positions at the company. Using this approach, he hired 14 graduating seniors over the course of four years and several more before he recruited teams, many of whom are still with the company. I’m grateful for the demonstrated commitment Jim has to the College and to our students.”

Jim brought his business acumen and leadership experience to the Allegheny Board of Trustees in 2013. His committee service has spanned areas influencing nearly every aspect of the College, from the student experience to finances to infrastructure and more. Norma has served on the College’s Alumni Council since 2019 and is a member of its Donor Appreciation Committee, which reaches out to Allegheny supporters to thank them for their generosity.

“Jim and Norma have been philanthropic champions for Allegheny, among our most generous as members of the President’s Society, and among our most loyal with an amazing 40 consecutive years of giving to the College,” says Senior Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Engagement Sara Pineo. “It is humbling and inspiring to think about the decades of Allegheny graduates whose lives were touched by the Wibles’ generosity.”

The Wibles have provided financial support for many initiatives at the College, including scholarships. They have faithfully contributed to the Lewis Wible ’42 Scholarship, which is named for Jim’s father, who served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1961 to 1979. The first person in her family to attend college, Norma also independently established a scholarship fund in honor of her parents, Joseph and Fran Klaus, to benefit women who are following in her footsteps as first-generation students at Allegheny. In doing so, she hopes to allay their concerns about paying for higher education.

“Sometimes that bottom line makes the decision for the student,” Norma said in a 2019 Ella Nash Society Newsletter article. “If I can offer just one person a bit to offset that financial concern, then I’d like to do that in honor of my parents’ generosity.”

Through their involvement and munificence, the Wibles have made a powerful statement to their fellow alumni and to current students about the importance of giving back to move the College forward. They have set a shining example, forging a legacy that will surely endure for generations. She practices in both New York State and Pennsylvania and is passionate about making sure that victims’ voices are heard. Katie has successfully resolved hundreds of claims on behalf of survivors who were sexually abused as children. She earned her law degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Katie advocates for the passage of comprehensive statute of limitations reforms when it comes to childhood sexual abuse throughout the country.

In March 2023, Katie testified before the Pennsylvania Judiciary Committee in Harrisburg, stressing the importance of opening the statute of limitations window for victims of childhood abuse. This would allow voters to enact a two-year window to bring civil suits involving childhood sexual abuse that would otherwise be outside the normal statute of limitations.

Katie also works to protect the rights of victims of online exploitation and childhood sexual abuse material. She has worked closely on different initiatives that seek to protect the rights of crime victims through comprehensive policy reform. This includes advocating for the 2018 passage of the Amy, Vicky, and Andy Act, the federal law which changes how courts determine the amount of restitution victims of child pornography offenses receive.

She serves on the board of the Women’s Law Project of Pennsylvania and is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the National Crime Victims Bar Association. She supports the Women’s Center and Shelter of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Allegheny College is proud to recognize the efforts and advocacy of Katie Fleet Shipp with the inaugural Young Alumni Citation.

Blue Citation Recipient

Tim Reeves ’83

While serving as former Pennsylvania Gov. He has since used those same attributes in his volunteer work on behalf of Allegheny College.

In 2007, Tim was appointed to the College’s Board of Trustees, where he would serve with distinction until 2021. Professor of Spanish Barbara Riess notes that Nancy went above and beyond in her work because she “cares about the institution — and those of us lucky enough to be here — and has wanted Allegheny to be the best institution it can be.”

Known as a rigorous yet caring instructor and advisor to students, Nancy was also a key contributor to curricular development and a respected colleague among faculty. Former students share that Nancy always challenged them to be the best they could be — and that her kindness and patience helped them immensely as they progressed through their Allegheny education and their next steps after graduation.

Rob served with distinction on the College’s Board of Trustees for 20 years — chairing the Board from 2013 to 2016 — and was conferred with emeritus status in 2022. Through the Bruce R. Thompson Center for Business & Economics, Rob has served as a panelist for the Executive Roundtable and mentored students as a judge in the Zingale Big Idea Competition.

Along with their hands-on leadership and service, the Smiths have been generous financial supporters of many initiatives at the College, including the Annual Fund, Gator athletics, the Music Department, and the Bentley Hall restoration project. The Smiths were also leaders in the acquisition and renovation of the College’s Guest House, and Rob is particularly proud that a sign above the house’s bar bears his and fellow Trustee Doug Ziegler’s names.

“Allegheny College and Meadville would not be what they are today without Rob and Nancy Smith,” Vice President for Institutional Advancement Matt Stinson says. “While their investments in Meadville are very visible, their investments in the College are often made quietly without any fanfare. They epitomize what is meant by giving sacrificially of time, talent, and treasure.”

The Smiths have indeed worked tirelessly to strengthen the Meadville community. Now the executive chairman of Acutec Precision Aerospace, Inc., Rob built the business from 17 people in 1994 to over 430 employees at facilities in three locations, including Meadville and Saegertown.

Acutec has also forged deep ties with Allegheny by hiring graduates and providing valuable learning opportunities for current students. Initiatives include internships, a 3D design co-op course taught on campus by an Acutec employee, and an innovative Manufacturing Advanced Placement Program through which Allegheny students can gain valuable work experience and, following graduation, receive 100% defrayed tuition in the Master of Manufacturing Management Program at Penn State Behrend.

In addition, Rob and Nancy have given selflessly through volunteer leadership roles in the Meadville community. They have become stalwarts in and champions for the region. A wide array of organizations have benefited from their insights and work, including Women’s Services, Inc., Meadville Medical Center, the Academy Theater, the Meadville Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Board, and the Economic Progress Alliance, among others.

The Smiths are also actively committed to economic revitalization in the community and are part owners of French Creek Coffee and Tea, French Creek Framing and Fine Art, YogaSpot Meadville, and Cussewago Creek Distillery. Recognizing the importance of a vibrant, attractive downtown, Rob devotes significant time to real estate renovation in the heart of Meadville.

On the Allegheny campus, Rob and Nancy have also been a valued and enthusiastic presence at Gator athletic contests, particularly basketball and soccer. Over the years, the Smiths have developed relationships with coaches and student-athletes, forging lasting and rewarding bonds.

“Rob and Nancy’s unwavering support of the College and in particular the Athletics and Recreation Department has meant the world to us — not just because of their financial support but because it was done with love,” Director of Athletics and Recreation Bill Ross says. “Their love for Allegheny, love for the students, staff, and alumni, and love for the Meadville community are unmatched.”

Rob and Nancy Smith have demonstrated outstanding loyalty and generosity that have greatly benefited their alma mater and the students, faculty, and staff throughout this learning community. With a background in both literature and medicine, she has the ability to not only connect ideas and information from a variety of disciplines but does so in a way that speaks to a variety of students.” said Margaret Zeller ’20, a former student.

Jennie, who serves as the chair of the English Department, uses her expertise in different disciplines to appeal to students whose interests do not lean toward the humanities. “Her excitement and enthusiasm is absolutely infectious, and transcends to her students at any level of course, whether it is within a Shakespeare course or an Early British Literature course,” said Zeller.

Jennie’s ability to dissect literary phrases and translate difficult prose is key to her success as a teacher. “To sit in Jennie’s class is to enter a kind of torrent of thinking, interdisciplinary connection, and very good humor,” said Benjamin Slote, professor of English. “The velocity starts with her, but she is amazingly good at getting her students to rev their own engines as well. And this is with the high challenge of 16th and early 17th century English texts. She has also been tireless in bringing these old literary works, starting with Shakespeare’s plays, into 21st century frameworks of meaning, particularly in having students explore modern performances of the plays.”

Students say Jennie’s success in the classroom is due to her ability to welcome new ideas and interpretations. She knows that literature is subjective and that there is more than one way to interpret a story or theme. In Jennie’s classroom, an open exchange of ideas and theories is encouraged, according to her students.

“She has that uncanny ability of hitting the teaching ‘sweet spot.’ She pushes students out of their comfort zone, while also providing an environment that feels secure for those very ideas that seem strange or different to be put on the table and sincerely discussed,” Zeller said.

As an educator, Jennie has proven to be tough but fair. She challenges students to share their best ideas and gets them to exceed their own expectations.

“Jennie Votava possesses a first class mind, a fact reflected in both her ambitious, richly interdisciplinary scholarship and her classroom instruction,” Slote said. “We are unspeakably lucky to have her helming the English department and leading students into the high art of rigorous literary and critical thinking.”

Allegheny is pleased to present Associate Professor Jennie Votava with the 2023 Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Recipient of the Julian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching

Richard Bowden

Professor Richard Bowden has spent more than 30 years at Allegheny College introducing students to the natural world and the environment that surrounds them.

Whether it’s plying the waters of Lake Erie, exploring the woods of the Bousson Environmental Research Reserve, or just holding class under the canopy of trees outside Carr Hall, Rich, a professor of Environmental Science and Sustainability, likes to use the great outdoors and the wonders of nature as his classroom.

“Rich was the one who helped me develop my passion for solving environmental problems with a nuanced understanding of the issues,” said Sebastian McRae ’22. “How did he teach this? Rich and I would talk in the van on the way out to field sites during my FS101. Allegheny travelers begin in Palermo, Sicily’s vibrant capital, where the past and present are inextricably linked. Ancient peoples, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spaniards, French, and Italians are just a few of those civilizations that have claimed this fascinating city, each of whose influence continues to reverberate. Our itinerary includes Palermo’s dazzling history, art and architecture, food, performing traditions, and position as a destination and transit location for contemporary migrants. Our trip concludes with visits to ancient Greek cities whose spectacular ruins continue to enchant.

Activity level: Moderately active. Travelers must be able to make long walks and stand unassisted for extended periods of time. Participants can expect three or more miles of walking most days, often over uneven terrain, hills, stairways, and under-paved streets. In mid-May the weather should be warm and sunny, with average daily temperatures in the 70s and 80s. We have scheduled extended free time each day so travelers can recharge or pursue additional adventures on their own. This trip is not recommended for people who require mobility assistance or are unable to walk or stand unassisted for extended periods.

Pricing

Pricing:

From $3,800 per person, based on double occupancy
Single room supplement $600
Please note that quoted prices are estimated based on current costs and a minimum of 20 participants and are subject to change.

Trip capacity: 20 alumni and guests

Price Includes:

Nine-day/eight-night exclusive Allegheny tour with Allegheny faculty members

Eight nights of accommodations at a 4-star centrally located hotel

Breakfast each day along with group lunches and dinners as identified in the itinerary

Entrance fees and ground transportation as per itinerary

Global Medical Plan, providing accident and sickness coverage to alumni and guests. An especially good option to investigate is a non-stop flight to Rome; fares are often under $1000. Then, transfer to one of the budget carriers serving Palermo, including RyanAir, Easy Jet, AeroItalia, and ITA. These are quite inexpensive, reliable, and allow for maximum flexibility if you wish to extend your time in Italy.

Travelers in northwest Pennsylvania, western New York, and Ontario should investigate flights from Toronto to Rome. These are frequently non-stop and priced considerably lower than those from the United States.

<a target="_self" class="button button-lg
