CMU Summer Security Intensive Fellowship Information Session

When: Friday, January 18 | 12:15 pm – 1:00 pm

What: Representatives from CMU’s Heinz College IT Lab will visit campus to promote their Summer Security Intensive (SSI) which is a paid seven-week summer fellowship where participants:
– Study with the world’s leading security, analytics, and policy researchers, including the CERT division of the Software Engineering Institute
– Take coursework in security analytics and policy
– Apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through experiential learning to improve the cybersecurity posture for local organizations

They will also promote their Master’s Program in Information Security Policy & Management. Students who complete the SSI and then enroll in the graduate program will receive a scholarship to cover at least 50% of the tuition for the Master’s Program.

The information session will be followed by open office hours in Pelletier 253

Lunchtime Learning:

Eileen Webb ’06

When: Thursday, January 17 | 12:15 pm – 1:30 pm

Where: Quigley Hall Henderson Auditorium

What: Allegheny alumna and Manager of Exempt Organization Tax Services at Ernst & Young, Eileen Webb, will be on campus to talk about her over ten years of experience working with various types of tax-exempt organizations including large health care systems and other health care organizations, community development financial institutions, education, and other community and charitable organizations.

*Eileen will hold open office hours in Pelletier Library in the Career Education office immediately following the presentation. Stop by Career Education to meet with Eileen one-on-one and learn more about her career path!*

Center for Business and Economics trip to Cleveland

When: Tuesday, January 29

What: The CBE is sponsoring a trip to downtown Cleveland where they will participate in a banking, insurance & finance panel at Key Bank, network with alumni at the exclusive Pura Vida restaurant for lunch, then we’re off to tour the Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank. This is a perfect opportunity for students who would like to explore their interest in the banking, finance & insurance industries  and meet professional economists at the Fed.

Professors Ormiston, Bianco and Michaelides will lead the way along with Beth Ryan and Sarah Holt for a career exploration journey to opportunities in Cleveland.

This trip is free to students thanks to a gift from Bruce Thompson ’86, Vice Chairman of Bank of America.

Carnegie Mellon University Summer Security Intensive Fellowship

As our world becomes increasingly digitized, the privacy, intellectual property, and fraud risks continue to grow. These cyber threats are highly relevant to all sectors of the economy, which is driving a major talent shortage for the information security industry. Our Summer Security Intensive will begin to prepare its participants for a career in this high-growth field.

IT Lab: Summer Security Intensive (SSI) is a paid seven-week summer fellowship where participants:

  • Study with the world’s leading security, analytics, and policy researchers, including the CERT division of the Software Engineering Institute
  • Take coursework in security analytics and policy
  • Apply the knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through experiential learning to improve the cybersecurity posture for local organizations

SSI is a fellowship program for rising college seniors. This program is designed for U.S. citizens and permanent residents interested in pursuing graduate degrees and careers in the information security sector.

Students who complete SSI and are later admitted to a master’s program at Heinz College will be eligible to receive a scholarship of at least 50% of tuition.

Priority Application Deadline: February 1, 2019 (receive admission decision by mid-February)
Final Application Deadline: April 1, 2019 (receive admission decision by May 1)
Dates: June 13, 2019 to August 3, 2019
Financial Support: Heinz College will cover costs of participation in the IT Lab program. This includes the costs of housing, meals, tuition, books, supplies, social functions, travel expens­es to and from Pittsburgh (within the United States) AND a $1,500 stipend.

Eastern Virginia Medical School Summer Scholars Program

The Summer Scholars Program is a mentored research internship offered by EVMS Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia. The competitive 11-week program is open to college seniors (rising or graduating) and first- or second-year graduate or medical students who are exploring potential careers in medical, biomedical, public health or behavioral research.

Students chosen for the program will conduct a preselected research project, from start to finish, and present their project outcomes to the scientific community. Students are listed as co-investigators on their projects, which are frequently published and presented on the national level. This summer experience includes formal classroom training and personalized application in research design, implementation and publication and can greatly benefit those considering a career in research.
