Dr. Melissa R. Meade has written and researched across media studies, labor and identity, civil society, critical\/cultural communication, digital media, community engagement, and language and social interaction. Her book project is a multi-year ethnography of the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania and its diaspora in which she investigates the many ways that global capitalism reorganizes social difference through its regimes of resource extraction, labor displacement, and environmental classism. The analysis of these constructions is based on three sets of data: material gathered during several years of offline fieldwork in the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, autoethnographic stories (as a Coal Region resident and the granddaughter of miners), and the collaboration with local participants vis-\u00e0-vis<\/em> a public digital humanities forum that she created and maintains called \u201cthe Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania Digital Project.\u201d (See https:\/\/anthracitecoalregion.org\/<\/a>). On this forum, community members contributed their first-hand stories and artifacts illustrating life in the Anthracite Region. Residents document how they come to terms in contradictory ways with the effects of environmental inequality: They acknowledge how extractive sites continue to generate values as abandoned lands \u201crented\u201d for toxic waste disposal and they also attest to the place-based identities that emerge from these experiences of inequity. Her research offers a breakthrough by highlighting the shift from the industrial to what is now the service economy in Rust Belt communities. Dr. Meade\u2019s work bridges the gap between virtual and offline ethnography and highlights the counternarratives that residents of the Anthracite Coal Region of Northeastern Pennsylvania tell about the lived experiences of deindustrialization.<\/p>\n

Dr. Meade has received numerous awards for her research including the 2020 Constance Coiner Award in Working-Class Studies from the Working-Class Studies Association, the 2020 Best Dissertation Award from the National Communication Association\u2019s Ethnography Division, the Donald P. Cushman Memorial Award from the National Communication Association, and a Top Competitive Paper in Ethnography from the National Communication Association. Her article \u201cIn the Shadow of the Coal Breaker: Cultural Extraction and Digital Dialogical Communication in the Anthracite Coal-Mining Region\u201d published in Cultural Studies<\/em> won both \u201cJournal Article of the Year\u201d in American Studies and \u201cTop Journal Article\u201d in Ethnography from the National Communication Association in 2017. Her research has been published in a number of outlets including Cultural Studies<\/em>, Discourse & Communication<\/em>, CineJ Cinema Journal<\/em>, The International Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods, <\/em>and in edited volumes. She has work under revision for Media, War, & Conflict.<\/em><\/p>\n

Dr. Meade has been a part of various communities: a co-organizer for the Global Fusion Conference, an Early Career Scholar Officer for the Language and Social Interaction Division of the International Communication Association, a University Fellow at Temple University, a Center for the Humanities Digital Humanities Scholar at Temple University, a HASTAC Digital Humanities Scholar, a participant in the ILIADS Digital Humanities Summer Institute at Hamilton College, and a recipient of a teaching commendation by the Villanova University Office of Athletics, to name a few. Previously, her research has been supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, the Rotary Foundation, Villanova University\u2019s Waterhouse Family Institute for the Study of Communication and Society, the Charlotte Newcombe Foundation, and the Philadelphia Mayor\u2019s Commission. She is currently a recipient of the National Communication Association Advancing the Discipline Grant.<\/p>\n

Before pursuing a career in academia, Dr. Meade worked and studied in various areas of communication including public communication, intercultural communication, media, and language. In addition to a Ph.D. in Media and Communication from the Lew Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University, she holds a Master\u2019s degree in Educational Linguistics and Intercultural Communication and a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Sexuality, and Women\u2019s Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a Postgraduate Diploma in Intercultural Studies from the University of the Basque Country located in Donostia-San Sebasti\u00e1n, Spain where she was a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar. She completed her undergraduate degree at Albright College. She speaks fluent Spanish. Joseph DeLeon is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication and Cultural Studies with a Ph.D. in Film, Television, and Media from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in Media, Culture, and Communication from New York University, and a B.A. in French and Comparative Cultures and Politics from Michigan State University.<\/p>\n

His teaching spans courses in digital media theory, digital media and identity, documentary film studies, environmental media studies, queer media history, and media studies methods. His classes provide students with media literacy skills to understand how power is distributed and enacted along the critical intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. He guides students to learn from understudied archives and to find ways to build community participation for social justice into contemporary media use.<\/p>\n

kt shorb (they\/them) is the producing artistic director of the devised theatre troupe that centers queer people of color, Generic Ensemble Company. They hold a BM in Music Composition from Oberlin Conservatory, an MA in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in Performance as Public Practice (Theatre), also from UT-Austin. Additional training includes acting and devising with the SITI Company and intimacy direction with Theatrical Intimacy in Education.<\/p>\n

kt’s theatre directing focuses on ensemble-devised theatre based on canonical texts and new plays created in collaboration. Theatre directing credits include The Future of Ismael<\/em>, black girl love<\/em>: an adaptation project<\/em>, The Women of ____ <\/em>(a song, not song<\/em>), Carmen<\/em>, 893<\/em> | Ya<\/em>–ku<\/em>–za<\/em>, Scheherazade<\/em>, The Mikado<\/em>: Reclaimed<\/em> and Robin Hood<\/em>: An Elegy<\/em>. Opera directorial work includes directing fellowships for Wolf Trap Opera and Chicago Summer Opera. kt has acted in many venues including: Victory Gardens Theater, the Electric Lodge, the VORTEX, the Off Center and Mary Moody Northen Theatre.<\/p>\n

kt’s scholarship is rooted in critical race studies, queer studies, performance studies, and creative practice-as-research. It examines how queer people of color theatre artists enact heroic and spectacular moments that defy common-sense notions of physics. Their most recent project explored how artists and audiences create moments of time travel through performance. Their current research investigates rehearsal room practices that center queer people of color and instances where communities of color create “something from nothing.” They have taught at St. Edward’s University, UT Austin, and Southwestern University.<\/p>\n

Theatre Scholarship Audition-Interviews<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Allegheny College Theatre Scholarships are awarded based upon a student\u2019s intended level of participation and ability. Students who plan to major or minor in Theatre are eligible, as are those who plan to participate in co-curricular productions in the Playshop Theatre<\/a> but have majors and minors outside of Theatre. The Award is $1000 and is renewable based upon continued participation.<\/p>\n

All applicants should prepare a letter of intent that explains how they see their work in Theatre as part of a liberal arts education. During the audition-interview, students will present their work, discuss their past experience, and share what they hope to gain during their time at Allegheny.<\/p>\n

Performance applicants should prepare either a 2-minute monologue or two 1-minute monologues. Design and production applicants should bring physical or digital examples of their work. Directing and management applicants should bring a sample of their work, such as a recording of a scene or a prompt book. We expect that students may have a range of experiences. Over the years, LeeAnn has worked in various production and management roles with such companies as Cirque du Soleil, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, World Food Prize, Iowa Summer Rep, Iowa Summer Opera, The Moving Company, and Riverside Theatre. One of LeeAnn\u2019s most memorable shows was taking a production of La B\u00eate to the Kennedy Center to be performed for the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.<\/p>\n

As Technical Director, LeeAnn oversees the construction and installation of all production elements for Playshop shows, trains and supervises the student production workforce and technical staff for each show, maintains safe and efficient performance facilities across the Allegheny College campus, and provides technical support for ceremonial events on campus.<\/p>\n

\nGoals\u00a0include: learning ethnographic research methods like interviews and participant observation; learning how to tell important community stories through podcasting and website development; developing a sense of place and strong relationships with community members.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to spend the semester exploring how folks are building community in Meadville and learning strategies for researching their work and telling their stories. You all are officially members of a\u00a0research team<\/b>\u00a0whose primary objective is to\u00a0collaborate\u00a0<\/b>to examine community efforts in Meadville and to publish your findings in the form of a website and podcasts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll spend a few weeks early in the semester reading other scholars\u2019 work on community formation and discussing methods for studying the Meadville community\u2014namely, in-depth interviewing and participant observation, and ethnographic coding for analysis. You\u2019ll put this knowledge to work in the\u00a0research phase<\/b>, when each of you will interview at least one community organizer in Meadville. You\u2019ll be responsible for developing your interview questions, organizing your time with your interviewee, conducting and recording the interview, and transcribing the recording. When appropriate, you will also conduct participant observation, observing and taking notes while an interviewee is involved in some aspect of their community work.\u00a0 You\u2019ll also be responsible for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the team, summarizing key findings from your interviews and\/or observations. Finally, some of you will be taking photographs for use on the website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second phase of our collaboration will be the\u00a0analysis and publishing phase<\/b>, during which the team will collaborate to determine key topics for the podcasts, design and produce the podcasts, and design and produce the website. During this phase of the collaboration, you will break into smaller teams responsible for various elements of our podcast series and website. Most of you will be on a\u00a0podcasting team<\/b>, and each team will produce one episode for our podcast mini-series. I anticipate 5 teams of 2-3 students each, though this may change depending on our findings during the research phase.\u00a0 Some of you will be on a\u00a0website team<\/b>\u00a0responsible for web design and building written content for the site. All students will contribute supplemental written or visual materials to the website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, we hope to showcase your work at a venue in Meadville; this showcase will take shape as the semester progresses and as we learn more through our research. Part of your work on this project will be in contributing to the preparations for this presentation of your work and participating in the presentation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second season of the Meadiaville Listening Project was dropped on 4\/30\/2018. To celebrate, over 50 students, faculty, and community members gathered at Foundry CoWork in the Parkside Commons to showcase the podcasts made to honor the people doing inspiring work in the community.<\/p>\n
