Dr. Kat Stephens-Peace is a researcher, scholar, and former practitioner of higher education and student affairs. She\u2019s earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, her Master of Education (Ed.M) from Columbia University, Teachers College, in Higher and Postsecondary Education, & her Bachelor from Sarah Lawrence College, concentrating in Ed Policy, Sociology of Education, & Africana Literature. She\u2019s also studied at Borough of Manhattan Community College with a focus on Creative Writing and Caribbean Literature.<\/p>\n

At Allegheny College, Dr. Stephens-Peace is a visiting Assistant Professor in Community and Justice Studies, where she is a Diversity and Teaching Fellow. She takes special attention to curating the courses to the complexities of higher education in an interdisciplinary and US\/Transnational context.<\/p>\n

Her research focuses on the lives and experiences of diverse student groups, across gender, race, country of origin, ability, and sexual & gender orientation. Students are expected to commit to a sustained community engagement position for one year (e.g. Bonner, Davies, Allegheny Volunteer Service Leader, or other varieties of civically engaged internships or experiences). Under the guidance of a faculty advisor, seniors design their project, conduct research,and present drafts, all leading to the completion of a significant piece of original work. The final step in the comp process is to defend one\u2019s project in front of an affiliated faculty panel. Seniors also present their results at the department\u2019s annual Senior Project Symposium.<\/p>\n

This comprehensive project demonstrates to employers and graduate schools the ability to complete a major assignment, to work independently and creatively, to analyze and synthesize information, and to write and speak persuasively.<\/p>\n

The senior comp in COMJ may take a variety of forms. Community Based inquiry is a common approach that often involves the development, in partnership with community,of a sustainable initiative or project. For example, a recent senior comp investigated the feasibility of and oversaw the implementation of a Time Trade initiative in Meadville. Other senior comps may investigate an important social question through a theoretical or philosophical framework.<\/p>\n
