What Is Counseling?
The Counseling and Personal Development Center (CPDC) is a safe space to explore identity, learn skills to manage emotions effectively, and examine relationships. We provide brief counseling that focuses on developing tools the empowers the student to make change in their life.
What are hours of operation?
The CPDC is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a one hour lunch from noon until 1 p.m., unless otherwise posted.
Can a student just walk in?
At this time, we do not offer drop in services through the CPDC.
What if a student needs immediate support?
Actively enrolled students have access to a dedicated 24/7 Line that is staffed around the clock, including school breaks and holidays. The 24/7 Line is (814) 332-2105.
How often may a student be seen?
CPDC offers brief, effective therapy that fits within the busy schedules of our students. Frequency and number of sessions varies depending upon student need (that is determined by clinical assessment). If a student’s need exceeds the capacity of the CPDC, we will work closely with the student to get them connected with a community provider.
Is there a fee?
Students are not charged an additional fee for utilizing the CPDC. We also do not bill insurance.
Can students request a specific counselor?
Yes; students may indicate on their request for counseling forms their preferred counselor. However, we cannot guarantee that specific requests for counselors will be granted due to scheduling and caseloads.
With faculty, staff, and/or administrators? EXEMPTION: CPDC must inform the Dean of Students Office if a student has been transported to the hospital by way of the CPDC Office. Only minimal information will be shared (see Informed Consent, available in the CPDC office). With parents and/or guardians?What information will be shared?
Information released is contingent upon the parameters of a Release of Information.
CPDC cannot share any information with any other Allegheny community members, including employees, regarding clients without a signed Release of Information. If a Release has been signed by the student, the information released is contingent upon the parameters set in the Release (see Policies Regarding Contact With Campus Communities).
