Ryan Cole ’10 – Summer 2009

Summer 2009 Davies Leader

“Main Street Program”
Redevelopment Authority of the City of Meadville

The Redevelopment Authority of the City of Meadville is the lead agency in downtown and neighborhood revitalization in the City of Meadville. They capitalize on our natural environment to build a vibrant community with full employment, an expanding tax base and attractive cultural and recreational opportunities. Ryan is beginning his second year as a Davies Leader at the Redevelopment Authority. He has been an active student in developing the relationship between the college and the community. As Ellie Davies said, “there’s no other student who will help to organize 7:30am meetings for the community and then come to them before his early classes.” In the spring of 2009, Ryan received the Lew Davies Award for Outstanding Community Service.

While continuing his work as a Davies Leader for the Redevelopment Authority, Ryan will develop and support the four committees that will be established under the Main Street Program after the application approval is complete. Ryan will conduct neighborhood research and analysis in support of an Elm Street Program planning grant. He will continue to be part of the Main Street Program and the redevelopment of downtown Meadville with the goal to preserve promote and improve the historic character, arts, culture and educational opportunities and act as a catalyst for development in the community.

Ryan is a very strong Leader from Allegheny College and has involved Students in his leadership work. Ryan has been part of many campus events promoting community involvement and community service. Ryan attended the National Main Street Conference in Chicago during his 2008-2009 community service for the Redevelopment Authority. This summer, he plans to attend another conference for the Main Street Program. Ryan continues to be enthusiastic about his work for the Redevelopment Authority. He has gained a great deal of knowledge about Meadville and has become a well known face to many local business owners.

Ryan is from Wattsburg, PA. He is a rising senior at Allegheny College. He is now majoring in Biology and minoring is Psychology. In the spring of 2009, Ryan was a Leader for an Allegheny Alternative Spring Break trip to Memphis, Tennessee. He has attended ACCEL’s Collegiate Leadership Conference (CLC) and has been part of Allegheny’s Jamaica Mission Trips.
