Where

A paradise for nature lovers, foodies, and entrepreneurs everywhere, there’s no shortage of opportunities to explore what interests you. Take advantage of Taiwan’s status as a key player in the high-tech industry with an internship. Feast at one of the city’s many night markets. Watch a Little League game. Bike the riverside. Check out the vibrant music scene. Go surfing at Fulong Beach. On weekends, explore Tainan.

The Academic Program at National Taiwan University

Allegheny students can spend the fall or spring semester at National Taiwan University.  CET Taiwan gives you access to the best parts of study abroad—intensive language classes,  internship opportunities in Chinese and English-speaking environments, and a location that balances life in a big city with quick getaways to nature. And with Taiwanese roommates who bring language and culture into your home life, it won’t be long before Taipei feels like your new home away from home.

Intensive Language Learning: Whether you are new to the Chinese language or already have several years of college-level experience, you take on an intensive curriculum with small group classes, and plenty of individual attention. Leave Taipei with the knowledge and study habits to set you up for long-term success.

Add on an internship: Taipei’s job market boasts a wide variety of opportunities, including in the political, educational, business, and civil society sectors. If you choose to intern for your elective, the course component complements on-the-job learning to not only build your résumé but also give you the framework and context to take ownership of your experience.

Academic Structure

Students enroll directly with National Taiwan University’s Chinese Language Division (CLD) in a class that meets once daily for 3 hours.

Course Credit

Students enroll in a 12-credit, direct-enroll language course with one 3-credit elective for a total of 15 recommended credits.

Courses

For a full list of course offerings, visit CET’s website here.

Eligibility

It is highly recommended that students complete 4 semesters at Allegheny prior to studying at National Taiwan University. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred, but admissions decisions are made on a case-by-case basis; lower GPAs are still encouraged to apply. There is NO language requirement, this program is open to students of any Chinese level – including absolute beginners.

Application Process

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, students should work on the Allegheny approval application at the same time as the host program application. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. The separate application deadline to apply directly to this program will vary and could be before or after Allegheny’s approval application due date. Check directly on their website (linked at the top of this page) for deadline information. For more information about the study away application process, please visit the application steps page.

Student Life

Around the city: Each term, the program offers different extra-curricular activities that allow you to explore Taipei, experience local culture, or just unwind with your friends. Hike up Elephant Mountain and enjoy panoramic views. Bike up to Tamsui with the local roommates or go on a night market tour. And there’s even more to see on your own.

A Weekend Away: CET takes you to Taroko Gorge for a jam-packed adventure in nature. Take a scenic Pacific-facing train to Hualien. Visit a Buddhist Monastery and enjoy a fresh lunch. Then head to Taroko National Park to take in the beauty of the gorge and the Eternal Springs Shrine, then sleep in a homestay in Xincheng Village. Finish your trip with some time spent at the beach and a hike along the Shakadang River canyon trail.
