Where: Ifrane, Morocco

Al Akhawayn University (AUI) is located in the city of Ifrane in Morocco. Ifrane, which is nestled in the beautiful Middle Atlas Mountains, has a growing population of about 15,000 people. Because of its remarkable European architectural style, Ifrane is nicknamed “Little Switzerland.” The landscape in the area offers mountains, parks, waterfalls, cedar and oak forests, and rich wildlife, making it a big attraction for people who enjoy outdoor activities year-round. In addition to outdoor pursuits, restaurants, cafes, hotels, nightlife, a weekly market, bazaars, hammams, campgrounds, and other diverse amenities make Ifrane a pleasant place to live and study. Ifrane is one hour from the imperial cities of Fez and Meknes, two and a half hours from the Moroccan capital Rabat, and three and a half hours from Casablanca.

Academics

Al Akhawayn University is an independent, public, not-for-profit, coeducational university for the education of students through an English-language, American liberal arts curriculum.  Al Akhawayn University’s student body is of a little over 2000 students, who are pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees. AUI offers undergraduate programs in: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The School of Business Administration, and The School of Science and Engineering.

A normal course load per semester is five courses (17 credit hours). As exchange students, you may choose to enroll only in four courses to leave time for traveling and discovering Morocco.

2.75 cumulative GPA and junior class standing is required.

Housing & Student Life

The University offers 21 residence halls and housing including cable and television service, internet, kitchens, laundry, and study lounges. There are 4 dining hall options ranging from fresh fruits & salads, Mediterranean cuisine, American & international cuisine, and vegetarian options. The campus has many amenities including a Health Center, post office, computer labs, Counseling Services, and 24-hour Security services.

Fees & Costs

Students are charged Allegheny tuition, a $800 off-campus study fee, an Allegheny double room rate, and a Gator Blue meal plan. Allegheny aid is applied to the program costs excluding work-study/campus employment. Additional costs include international airfare & local transportation, international travel insurance as well as the national insurance of Morocco, personal expenses (books, printing services, textbook expenses, and a housing deposit), and passport/visa fees.

Visa information

All students are required to have a residency permit to study in Morocco. Please consult with AUI regarding the permit.

Application

Allegheny students must apply for approval to study off-campus from the Global Education office AND apply directly to their chosen program. For this program, the program requires a nomination from Allegheny’s Global Education Office before students can apply directly to the program. So, students must complete the Allegheny approval application and then wait for further instructions to apply to their program. The Allegheny approval application deadline is February 20 for fall programs and September 20 for spring programs. Study away approval applications will be reviewed immediately following the appropriate semester deadline. After a student has been approved by Allegheny, the Global Education office will send the student’s nomination and/or application documents to the program abroad. Students will receive instructions directly from the host program’s visiting student office with their next steps.
